JUDO MASTERS - SHINKEN SHOBU RYU JUDO CLUB

On Saturday 06th of July Paul McConville and Dermot McCaul from Shinken Shobu Ryu Judo club Warrenpoint attended the British masters in Walsall. Both men where in the M7 category with Dermot competing in the under 90kg and Paul in the under 81kg category.

The British Masters is one of the largest competitions in the UK with competitors travelling from across Europe for and opportunity to compete against others in their age bracket.

Paul who is the current British open Gold medallist, was first to step to the mats winning his first 3 matches securing him a place in the final. The final was a hard-fought affair with both competitors attacking back and forward. Paul was just piped at the post and secured the silver to add to his vast collection.

The 90KG category is often known as the toughest group, due to the high amount of number entering it. Dermot who we can only describe as a technical wonder had 5 hard fights and was unsuccessful in reaching the medal brackets.

The club has also held a grading where our senior members James White and Gerard Moore and moving up. James who is a level 1 coach for the club secured his first Kyu (Brown belt). Gerard who already holds dan grades in traditional Ju jitsu, has moved up to third kyu (green belt). Both James and Gerard hold roles within our committee and help with the continued running and growth of our club.

It has also been great to grade the kids from both our Warrenpoint and Mayobridge kids clubs. The kids have shown tremendous growth within their judo and we can clearly see that we have some future champions in the making.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank WBR Credit Union for their continued support. This year again they have provided a cheque to the club. This helps help our teams train to the highest levels.

Next up for the club we have the British Kata Open Championships in September. We have two teams entering at the moment, Dermot and Paul and the second team will be Nigel O’Neil and Damian O’Hare.

Shinken Shobu Ryu is one of the only Judo clubs in the country that teaches Judo with all of its elements. We teach competitive Judo, Kata, the Judo Martial art and the self-defence aspects.

NEWRY PRIDE LINE-UP ANNOUNCED!

It's officially time to start getting excited for Newry Pride 2025. Preparations are well underway and this year's line-up is looking very exciting indeed.

Belfast Quire, Clare Sands, SOAK, St. Bishop and indie punk band Tramp have all been added to the bill. Organisers say they have also invited Chapelle Roan to call down after Electric Picnic but she sadly hasn't yet responded.

The free concert will take place in Marcus Square directly after the parade which leaves from The Quays shopping centre, waterside entrance at 1pm sharp and will make its way to the Square after a loud and proud walk down Buttercrane Quay, Merchants Quay, Sugar Island and Hill Street. Get the bunting up and the flags out so we can give you a wave!

Expect another colourful and lively day of enjoyment for all. There will be family fun stands, entertainment and food and drinks available in the square throughout the day. You can look forward to seeing your favourite local drag queens serving up some glam - Miss Auntie Marie and her friends will be out doing the rounds and there may even be a few more surprise guests in store.

This year's Grand Marshall is Alexa Moore. Originally from Newry, Alexa is now Policy, Campaigns and Comms Manager at The Rainbow Project Belfast. She has been at the forefront of the fight for Trans rights through very challenging recent years. She has also still found time to be a Múinteoir of Set Dancing and an all-round legend and angel.

This year's theme is 'Louder, Prouder, Together'. This is in response to all those who say there's no more need for Pride parades, and LGBTQIA+ people should just be quiet and keep themselves hidden. No thank you! It's also a nod to the LGBTQIA+ community and all its letters, each important and seen, and to the wider community and all the allies who support their LGBTQIA colleagues, friends and families. There may be a lot of work still to be done to tackle stigma, homophobia, and transphobia, and to make society a safe and welcoming place for all, but we can get there - loudly, proudly and together.

We welcome everyone who wants to show their support for LGBTQIA rights to come and take part. Parade registration remains open. You can sign up at the link: https://forms.gle/h3xW2ajwsLLqhhjW9

POLICE INVESTIGATE A SERIES OF BURGLARIES AND THEFTS IN SOUTH ARMAGH

Detectives are investigating a series of burglaries and thefts in south Armagh which occurred overnight.

The first report, received at around 2.20am this morning, Friday 11 July, stated that two men had attempted to force a window at a property in Chapel View in Crossmaglen, however it’s believed the pair made off in separate vehicles without gaining entry to the home.

A short time later a Volkswagen Tiguan was reported stolen from a house in nearby Fairy Glen. It’s understood thieves gained entry to the home, removed the car keys and subsequently took the vehicle.

Shortly before 6am a Range Rover was stolen from a house on Low Road in Meigh. Once again the home was entered and the vehicle taken using keys removed from the house.

Just after 8.30am this morning the occupants of another address in Chapel View found that a Peugeot van had been taken from outside their property overnight.

A third resident of Chapel View also awoke to find a wallet had been stolen from their car, which was parked on their driveway, whilst another vehicle owner reported their car, which had been parked at their home on Dundalk Road, had been rifled through.

Detectives in Newry CID are investigating all of these reports and would like to hear from anyone with information or doorbell, dashcam or any other footage captured in the areas of the homes targeted. Please call 101 with any information, or if you prefer you can provide information online via https://www.psni.police.uk/report.

Info can also be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity, by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting http://crimestoppers-uk.org.

HANDS OFF! 1,755 ARRESTS FOR NON-FATAL STRANGULATION IN FIRST TWO YEARS OF NEW LEGISLATION

This month, marks two years of the non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation being made a specific criminal offence in Northern Ireland, punishable by up to 14 years’ imprisonment.

Before this legislation, investigating police officers would have to provide evidence of intent to commit an indictable offence. For example, if someone had been strangled in what was believed to be a s*xually motivated attack, the officer would have to show that the perpetrator intended to commit s*xual assault before they could pursue prosecution.

This new legislation means that if you do anything that does or could restrict someone’s breathing in any way you should be prepared to face a prison sentence for this offence alone. Non-fatal strangulation includes; any part of your body or another object such as a ligature like a scarf or belt, chokeholds or headlocks, hanging, drowning or smothering.

Strangulation and suffocation can also at times, leave no visible injury, making it previously even more difficult to prosecute.

Over the last two years 26 June 2023 to 31 May 2025, there were 1,893 non-fatal strangulation reports recorded by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. In this time officers investigating have made 1,755 arrests resulting in 765 charges.

Detective Superintendent Lindsay Fisher explains: “Our figures show that between 10-12% of reporting domestic abuse victims have experienced non-fatal strangulation, placing them at the highest risk. In fact, studies have shown that in domestic abuse settings, victims are eight times more likely to be murdered by their partner if they have previously strangled them.

“We have made a significant amount of arrests and hit the ground running with this new legislation in just the first two years. 2,092 officers and staff have received specific training. We hope that this gives victims the confidence to come forward and continue reporting knowing that our officers are recognising and responding to the seriousness of this violent act.”

Sarah (not her real name) has been a victim of non-fatal strangulation twice at the hands of her abusive ex-partner, she reported to Police and as a result the perpetrator pled guilty to both incidents, she says: “I remember the first time it happened, I couldn’t quite believe that this violent man had my life in his hands. Although the strangling only lasted a matter of seconds it felt longer to me. You almost exit your body and feel everything slipping away as you struggle to breathe and lose control of your bladder. It is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced.

“Feeling another person’s hand on your throat and looking into their eyes as they squeeze is surreal. I am pleased that the police have hit the ground running with this legislation over the last couple of years and helped women like me get justice. To be listened to, believed and supported is all someone needs who has been through what I have.

“In any abusive relationship the victim always feels guilt about the burden the trauma places on others around them, I am no different. Phoning the police that night as I sat broken on the top of my stairs, was the best thing I ever did for me and my children. I have created distance between me and my abuser and we are finally safe. My message to others out there is – don’t risk your life by staying.”

Detective Superintendent Lindsay Fisher added: “It is common for strangulation to leave no visible signs of injury and consequences can be delayed by days or weeks. These include stroke, cardiac arrest, miscarriage, incontinence, seizures, memory loss and long-term brain injury.

“Consciousness can be lost after as little as four seconds. Blocking the jugular vein can take less pressure than opening a can of coke. Loss of consciousness indicates at the very least, a mild brain injury and many victims lose control of their bladder and bowels.

“Often strangulation is glorified as a gratifying act for both parties in po*******hy and young people in particular are susceptible to thinking this could be a fun, ‘consensual’ act to spice things up. However, the reality is far from the case. Consent to rough s*x is not a defence.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland have explained this new legislation and the dangers of non-fatal strangulation on their website here: www.psni.police.uk/non-fatal-strangulation

If you have been the victim of non-fatal strangulation - report to the Police via 101 or call 999 in an emergency.
