This Tuesday 28th September marks the 114th anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant in 1912.
To mark this anniversary, our Schomberg Fife and Drum Re-Enactment Band was delighted to have been invited once again to lead the Ulster Day parade, which took place this afternoon in Tandragee in Co. Armagh.
Members of our Schomberg Fife and Lambeg Drum Club also helped kick off the celebrations, with performances of traditional Fifing and Lambeg Drumming in the centre of Tandragee, before the parade got underway.
Ulster Day is an important date in the Ulster-Scots calendar. On the 28th September 1912, in the Kingdom of Mourne, many folk attended church services in advance of the signing of the Covenant. The Rev. William McMordie, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, delivered a sermon in support of the Covenant in Mourne Presbyterian Church.
The Covenant and Declaration was greeted with great enthusiasm in Mourne with 1038 men signing the Covenant and 1076 women signing the equivalent Declaration in venues such as Mourne Presbyterian Church Hall and Ballinran, Glenloughan, Ballymageough and Ballymartin Orange Halls!
It was great to play our part in marking this anniversary yesterday in Tandragee, and a special thanks must go to Moyrourkan True Blues LOL 305 for the invitation to take part.
