Hidden in the Kingdom of Mourne... ⛰️ 🌳

This beautiful pocket of rare ancient woodland cared for by the Woodland Trust is the perfect place for a quiet stroll in Mourne country.

With winding river paths, stone bridges and the best that nature has to offer, Mourne Park outside Kilkeel is a stunner of a spot!

There are three marked trails, and we did the longest (purple) route.

Rhododendrons are very destructive to the Irish landscape and shouldn't be here but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate their beauty.

How to hike Slieve Bearnagh from Happy Valley Car Park 🥾

*Mind the rocks at the top!

✅️ Park at Happy Valley CP 🚗
✅️ Follow the path to the stream and cross over 🚶‍♂️
✅️ Go over the stile and carry on, following the path to the col between Meelmore and Meelbeg
✅️ Go over the stile
✅️ Follow the path down and round to the stile at the base of Bearnagh
✅️ Follow the path up Bearnagh but curve round, instead of following the wall
✅️ Once you're round the back, look up to the rocks and aim for them
✅️ Enjoy the best views in the Mournes
✅️ Return by following the wall back down towards Meelmore
⌚️ 3.5-4h up and down

This beautiful walk is perfect for anyone looking for dramatic views without a strenuous hike, although the path isn't always flat, so be prepared for some steps and uneven terrain!

🚗 Park up at the carpark at Dunseverick Castle for free (it's very small, though!) for probably the most popular section of the path - heading west towards the Giant's Causeway (where you can also start). Other starting points include Portballintrae, White Park Bay and Ballintoy.

🚻 No toilets on site
🐕 Dog friendly (on leads)
⚠️ Careful on cliff edges

Make a day of it on the north coast by visiting Portrush, Portstewart or Ballycastle or take in other coastal attractions like Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Kinbane Head, Dunluce Castle or The Giant's Causeway.
