'Queen's University Air Squadron: A History' by Guy Warner

Formed in wartime Belfast in 1941, Queen’s University Air Squadron became a vital link between university life and the Royal Air Force. From its early days at Sydenham, training young men for wartime service, through decades of flying Tiger Moths, Chipmunks and Bulldogs over Northern Ireland, QUAS built a remarkable record of achievement, service and camaraderie.

Drawing on official records, photographs, personal memories and contemporary accounts, Guy Warner tells the story of a squadron that was shaped by war, post-war renewal, the coming of jet-age aviation, and the difficult years of the Troubles. Along the way are tales of first solos, summer camps, air displays, visiting dignitaries, sporting triumphs, mishaps, close calls and the everyday humour of squadron life.

Richly illustrated and carefully researched, Queen’s University Air Squadron: A History is both an aviation history and a tribute to the generations of students, instructors, ground staff and supporters who made the Squadron what it was. It will appeal to former members, aviation enthusiasts, Queen’s alumni and anyone interested in Northern Ireland’s military and flying heritage.

The County Donegal Railways had a route of 124 miles, five termini and three junction stations. For the most part they traversed hilly and thinly-populated country and for two generations they were a busy and efficient operation.

This is a revised edition of Dr EM Patterson’s first volume on the history of the narrow-gauge railways of North-West Ireland, originally published in 1962. This edition adds a valuable chapter of interviews and memories of some of the surviving workers and others who had contact with the railway. It also includes a chapter on the County Donegal Railway today, and some additional Glover drawings of locomotive, carriage and wagon stock.

Reconnecting Through Culture Schools Art Competition DEADLINE EXTENDED until Friday 5th June!

We recently launched this Schools Art Competition as part of our wider Shared Island-funded Reconnecting Through Culture project in association with The Alley Theatre. We wanted to give students a schools a bit more time to fit it into their schedules if they so wish, so we've decided to push our deadline back by two weeks.

The competition asks students across the North-West to produce an artwork portraying a form of transport of their choosing - be it a bus, a boat, a train, or a hot air balloon. We’re also asking for a short description explaining what the mode of transport symbolises in the artwork. The car packed up for the holidays might represent the freedom of summer, for example, or the ship on a stormy sea could symbolise the power of nature.

There are three categories in the competition – Primary School Juniors, Primary School Seniors and Secondary School Students. There are generous prizes of up to €150 in vouchers for the winners, and the school of each winner will receive an additional €100 towards art supplies. All placed entries will be displayed as part of temporary exhibition in the Alley Theatre, Strabane, and the artists will be invited to a prizegiving ceremony in September 2026.

We'd really appreciate any support our can provide in helping get the word out to schools and students across the North-West. Follow the link below for more information, and while you're there you can find our suggested lesson plan on the topic of railways in nineteenth and twentieth century art!
