GitLab’s 2025 The Economics of Software Innovation: £5B+ Opportunity at a Crossroads – conducted with The Harris Poll – highlights a powerful message for the software industry: while agentic AI is accelerating innovation and driving significant revenue and productivity gains, the human element remains absolutely crucial.

With 89% of UK executives confirming AI-driven software innovation as a top boardroom priority, the blend of AI automation and human creativity is creating a £5+ billion economic opportunity.

Yet, challenges around cybersecurity, governance and talent upskilling are rising alongside rapid AI adoption.

GitLab’s findings underscore that 75% of software development work is still performed by humans, and 72% of execs believe human contribution should be at least half – showing AI’s role as a complement, not replacement.

Louise Fellows, Vice President of UK at GitLab, tells Technology Magazine: “AI-fuelled software innovation is an undeniable source of competitive advantage and economic impact, with 89% of executives in the UK saying that it's now a core business priority.

“The companies pulling ahead are the ones blending AI with human expertise, leveraging agentic AI with intention, aligning software strategy with business value and building guardrails to innovate responsibly.

“With £5+ billion per year in potential value at stake, the organisations that optimise this human-AI partnership today will define the future of software tomorrow.”

AI is no longer theoretical – but a shortage of skills and ageing IT systems threaten to slow its transformative impact on UK businesses.

CGI’s 2025 Voice of Our Clients report reveals that while 72% of UK executives see digital acceleration as the main driver of change, only 21% have deployed AI solutions – far behind global peers.

Legacy platforms and a deepening tech talent crisis are major barriers, with 76% of organisations struggling to recruit and retain professionals.

Tara McGeehan, President of CGI in the UK and Australia, says: “The shift we’re seeing is from experimentation to ex*****on.“The shift we’re seeing is from experimentation to ex*****on. AI is no longer theoretical. It’s moving into production – and fast.

“The winners will be those who modernise their foundations now to scale adoption safely and effectively.

“AI isn’t the only game-changer on the horizon. Technologies like quantum and neuromorphic computing are coming fast and boards must be ready.

“Leaders need to create a culture of experimentation and stay alert to the next wave of disruption.

“The pace of change isn’t slowing and no one wants to be left playing catch-up.”

Quantum computing is taking a giant leap forward with Quantum Motion’s launch of the industry’s first full-stack quantum computer built on mass-producible silicon CMOS technology.

Installed at the UK’s National Quantum Computing Centre, this system uses standard 300mm semiconductor fabrication processes, enabling scalable, cost-effective quantum processors with millions of qubits.

Its data centre-friendly design is compatible with leading software frameworks like Qiskit and Cirq, paving the way for commercial quantum computing applications in drug discovery, clean energy optimisation, AI and more.

“This new form of quantum computer from Quantum Motion will take this groundbreaking technology another step closer to commercial viability – which could help support healthcare with faster drug discovery or clean energy by optimising energy grids,” says UK Science Minister Lord Vallance.

21/08/2025

What if we could forecast solar storms just like we do weather on Earth? That’s the promise of Surya, a new open-source AI foundation model unveiled by IBM and NASA.

Built with nine years of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory data — at an unprecedented scale — Surya can:
🌌 Predict solar flares with 16% greater accuracy than previous methods
🛰️ Forecast space weather events up to 2 hours in advance
⚡ Help protect satellites, aviation, power grids, telecommunications, and GPS from disruption

By sharing Surya openly on Hugging Face, IBM and NASA are not only advancing space weather forecasting but also democratising access to the largest curated heliophysics dataset ever released — empowering researchers, technologists, and policymakers around the world.

“Think of this as a weather forecast for space,” says Juan Bernabe-Moreno, Director of IBM Research Europe for the UK and Ireland.

“Just as we work to prepare for hazardous weather events, we need to do the same for solar storms.

“Surya gives us unprecedented capability to anticipate what’s coming and is not just a technological achievement, but a critical step toward protecting our technological civilisation from the star that sustains us.”
