Socialisation doesn’t mean your Dachshund needs to greet, play with or be friends with every dog they meet. ❤️

But what does good socialisation actually look like?

And what happens when your Dachshund is already barking, lunging, overwhelmed or struggling around other dogs?

Tomorrow I’ll be joined by Amy Amy | The Social Dog Trainer 🐶 TheSocialDog Trainer, who specialises in small dogs that bark, lunge and lose their s**t 🌶️😂

We’ll be talking about socialisation, neutrality, helping dogs learn to create space for themselves, why reactive behaviour develops, and what appropriate socialisation can look like when you already have a spicy little sausage at the end of the lead.

We’ll also be getting into the practical side of managing reactive dogs, including appropriate tool use, muzzles, setting dogs up for success and how good management can give both dogs and owners more confidence & freedom rather than less.

And, of course, we’ll be answering questions LIVE from my coaching clients. ❤️

Something new is coming to Tiny Legs Big Attitude Coaching. ❤️

This Saturday I’m being joined by Kate from The Modern Canine for the first of my new TLBA Expert Sessions, exclusively for my coaching clients.

And we’re starting with something I think is hugely valuable for Dachshund owners..

SCENTWORK & THE DACHSHUND 👃

Dachshunds are scent hounds. They were quite literally designed to put their noses to work, search, investigate and follow scent.

Yet when we think about fulfilling our dogs, we often immediately think about physical exercise.

More walking. More running. More throwing balls.

But fulfilment can look very different.

Scentwork gives our Dachshunds an opportunity to use the instincts they were bred for, while providing mental stimulation in a way that can be incredibly accessible, low impact and easy to incorporate into everyday life.

Kate and I will be talking about why scentwork matters, how it can provide an appropriate outlet for our Dachshunds and simple ways owners can begin introducing it at home.

My coaching clients will also be able to join us live, ask Kate questions and have access to the recording afterwards inside the growing TLBA Expert Library. ❤️

And I’m particularly excited that some of my brand-new September clients will be joining us before their coaching has even officially begun.

September coaching is now FULL. 🥹❤️

Eight new Dachshund families begin working with me this month, alongside my existing August clients.

I’ve made the decision not to open another intake immediately afterwards, so my next coaching intake will be December.

Applications will open nearer the time.

For now, I cannot bloody wait for Saturday. 😂👃❤️

A deer running across your path is a VERY different distraction to practising recall in an empty field. 🦌😂

Frankie saw it.
She thought about it.
I called her.
She came.

This is what I want from recall training.

Not a dog who comes back because there’s nothing better going on, but a dog who can respond when the environment suddenly gives them a VERY tempting alternative.

And this kind of reliability isn’t built when the deer appears.

It’s built through all the training that came before it.

I didn’t teach Bunny to do this through positive reinforcement alone.

Has she been rewarded? Thousands of times.

But she’s also been given guidance when she gets things wrong.

She understands pressure and how to switch it off. She understands “no”. She understands when I’m asking her to try again.

Tools, including the e-collar, have also been part of building that communication over the years.

She isn’t wearing one here.

What you’re watching is the result of five years of training and a dog who genuinely loves working with me.

For me, kindness isn’t only ever telling a dog when they’re right.

Clarity is Kindness.

Bunny has spent five years learning how to learn, problem-solve, take direction and work alongside me.

And today, with temperatures heading towards 30°C and no walk on the agenda, collecting apples became her morning training session. 🍎

She worked her brain. She earned breakfast. I got my apples collected.

Although at this point I’m thinking I should stop wasting her talents on apples and teach her to find truffles. 😂

When I became a first-time Dachshund owner, I was heavily influenced by the idea that dogs should be trained using rewards alone.

That isn’t what I subscribe to today.

Rewards matter enormously. But so do boundaries, guidance, consequences and clear communication.

Especially when it comes to something like off-lead freedom.

Dogs are predators. They have prey drive and instincts that can suddenly become far more powerful than whatever treat you have in your hand.

I don’t want a dog who listens only while the environment is less interesting than my reward.

I want a dog who can comprehend that my words have meaning.

That clarity is what ultimately allows me to give my dogs more freedom, not less.
