Ground under road shut due to sinkhole 'now stable'

The ground under a road shut due to a sinkhole that later revealed a collapsed historic culvert is now stable, a council has said.

The hole appeared on the A6015 Hayfield Road at Low Leighton, near the High Hill Road junction, in Derbyshire, in July.

Derbyshire County Council took over responsibility of the site and later said it was investigating the culvert, about 16ft (5m) below the road surface.

Work begins on city's new £1.8m children's home

Construction work has started on Leicester's first purpose-built children's home in more than 40 years, the city council said.

The £1.8m facility is set to open in late 2025 when it will be able to accommodate six young people aged between eight and 17.

Leicester City Council said the home, located in the west of the city, would look after children placed there because they could not live with their birth families.

Final decision on £2m car park repairs delayed

A final decision on £2m repairs to a multi-storey car park in Mansfield has been delayed.

The Four Seasons Shopping Centre car park was found to need a series of works earlier this year, including deck waterproofing, drainage repairs and replacement, and resurfacing of the upper decks.

Owner Mansfield District Council originally said it hoped to have a contractor in place by the summer, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

New electric street sweeper to target pollution hotspots

Blaby District Council said the machine has been specifically used in areas with major traffic routes and dense populations in the district.

It said air pollutant levels in the Air Quality Management Areas do not exceed national guidelines but remain higher than the advice from the World Health Organisation.

The authority said its first electric sweeper has been funded from £573,700 of government cash, which will also be spent on converting a diesel bin lorry to electric to further help improve air quality in the district.
