Two brothers track down their late father's racing car...

In 1988, Andy Sharpe took his first racing car — a 1956 Austin A35 — onto the circuit at Snetterton. He rolled it on the first lap, couldn't afford to fix it, and sold it before the year was out.

His sons never forgot it.

Andy went on to race cars until he was 74, but it was the A35 that started it all — "the first time we had petrol going through our veins," as his son Henry puts it. When Andy died in January from complications of Parkinson's, Will and Henry Sharpe made a decision: they were going to find their dad's first racing car and bring it home.

This is the story of how they did it.

Thirty-eight years after it left the family, the Sharpe brothers tracked down the original 1956 Austin A35 — kept for 25 years by a single owner who agreed to sell it back. With the help of Melton Mowbray race engineer Mark Wright, they restored the car and took it to Mallory Park, where their father's ashes are scattered, to race it in the Classic Sports Car Club event on 18 April.

All six Sharpe brothers were there. Their mum Lesley — who also lives with Parkinson's — collected donations trackside for Parkinson's UK.

Mallory Park will now be an annual family tradition.

It's actually an ex community bus - and on those lines, Lindzi is turning it into a community library that travels across the country.

SUNDAY RECAP.

This week's spotting, mostly courtesy of a Scottish detour:

Bentley R-Type Continental — a six-figure car parked between typical lifeless SUVs at the services on the Scottish border. Owner is an old-money octogenarian called Hugh who refuses to insure it for what it's actually worth.

Two Lotus'; One Exige (yellow V6 Cup) and one Elise (green track-spec) — clearly out together. Owners are two mates who do trackdays at Knockhill and have a running disagreement about which colour is faster.

Citroën ZX Temptation — a 90s French hatch with a "Retrosh*te" sticker, which tells you everything. Owner has strong opinions about which Citroën is the best Citroën, and you do not want to ask.

Suzuki Jimny — spotted in a Scottish coastal town. Owner is a smallholder who finds Cotswolds Jimny owners deeply embarrassing.

Series III Land Rover — W-plate, snorkel, light bar, fresh from being either rescued or delivered. Owner refers to mud as "conditions."
