Did you know Lowdham in Nottinghamshire has an incredible connection to the Titanic? 🚢

On the night of 15 April 1912, 21-year-old Harold Cottam was the wireless operator aboard RMS Carpathia. After hearing Titanic’s distress call, he rushed to alert the captain and crew, who turned the ship around and headed through the icy Atlantic to help.

Although they were around 67 miles away, Carpathia reached the scene and rescued 705 survivors. Harold then spent the next two days and nights alongside Titanic wireless operator Harold Bride, relaying messages to the mainland about those who had survived.

Years later, Harold settled in Lowdham, making this Nottinghamshire village home. It’s incredible to think that one of the unsung heroes of the Titanic disaster lived right here on our doorstep.

Had you ever heard of Harold Cottam before? 👇🏼

Did you know that part of the Titanic’s story has a connection to Hyson Green in Nottingham? 🚢

The enormous whistles fitted to Titanic’s funnels were manufactured right here at the old Hyson Green Valve Works. These giant bronze and brass whistles could reportedly be heard up to 11 miles away!

Even more fascinating, some of the whistles recovered from the wreck were brought back to the surface decades later and are now preserved in a museum.

It’s amazing to think that a small part of one of the world’s most famous ships started its journey right here in Nottingham.

Have you ever heard about this local connection to the Titanic? 👇🏼

Can you believe that around 3.2 billion people watched at least one minute of the 2010 World Cup? That’s nearly half the world’s population! ⚽🌍

And this year’s tournament is set to be the biggest yet, with matches taking place across Canada, the USA and Mexico.

Will you be watching? Or are you one of those people who can’t stand football? 😂

Either way, it’s going to be hard to avoid over the next few weeks!

Come on England! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

You’ve probably crossed Lady Bay Bridge countless times, but did you know it once starred as the Berlin border in a Cold War spy drama?

Built in 1878 for steam trains, the bridge carried railway traffic across the River Trent for over a century before being converted into a road bridge in 1979.

Then, in 1982, it had its moment in the spotlight. Lady Bay Bridge appeared in Smiley’s People, starring Sir Alec Guinness. For one dramatic scene, the bridge was transformed into the East-West Berlin crossing, with fake cobbled streets laid down to help create the illusion.

So next time you’re sat in traffic on Lady Bay Bridge, just remember... years ago you’d have been travelling by steam train, and in the 1980s you could have found yourself in the middle of a Soviet spy thriller!

Have you ever watched Smiley’s People? 👀

So why am I holding a Lego version of the Waterside Bridge in Nottingham…

Well, whilst I was having a wander over the bridge, I bumped into the lovely people organising the community celebration that’s taking place this Sunday.

They showed me this brilliant Lego model of the bridge and told me a little about what’s planned for the day.

📅 Sunday 14th June
⏰ 10am – 4pm

There’ll be a Lego bridge-building competition with prizes, the chance to meet Robin Hood, free face painting, activities for children, cycling sessions, entertainment and plenty of food and drink.

It sounds like a lovely day out and a great opportunity to take a look at Nottingham’s newest bridge if you haven’t visited it already.

Will you be popping along? 👀

Well done to my daughter, The Nott'm Lass, for reaching 30,000 followers on Facebook! 🎉 So proud of you. Keep going! 💚

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll probably know that Nottingham has a brand new bridge across the River Trent! 🌉💚

I’ve finally had the chance to walk across Waterside Bridge and I have to say, I’m impressed. It’s the first new bridge built over the River Trent in Nottingham since 1958 and it gives some fantastic views of the river and the city.

But I’ve got a question…

On the bridge there are coloured diamond symbols, including a yellow one and a green and white one. Does anyone know what they represent? 🤔

I’d love to know, so if you know the answer, pop it in the comments below! 👇🏼

And if you’ve already walked across Waterside Bridge, what do you think of it?

Do you ever wonder why Nottingham Castle doesn’t look like a proper castle? 🤔

The answer lies in one of the most dramatic moments in Nottingham’s history.

The medieval castle that once stood here fell into ruin and was replaced by a grand ducal palace. But in 1831, after the Duke of Newcastle opposed the Reform Act, tensions boiled over. An angry crowd stormed the building, looted it and set it ablaze during the Nottingham Reform Riots.

The palace was left as a ruin for decades before the building we see today was constructed on the same site.

So whilst Nottingham Castle may not have towers and battlements like Conwy Castle, it still stands on the footprint of one of England’s most important medieval castles.

Have you visited Nottingham Castle? 💚

And a completely random question… how many times do you think I said the word “castle” in the video? 😂
