This Thursday, the Supper Club comes to the gallery.

The last one was a sell-out, and one of those brilliant evenings nobody really wanted to end. So naturally, we’re doing it again.

This time, we’re bringing Fern Uppingham to Gladwell & Patterson and turning the gallery into a restaurant for one night only.

Seasonal small plates. British aperitifs. Fine art on the walls. Excellent people around the table. And, if last time is anything to go by, a fairly raucous finish.

“It’s a process that’s been developed over hundreds of years and we are using the benefits of previous generations’ minds, who worked out all the processes that we use today.

You don’t have to change them, you don’t have to modernise them. It’s just perfect the way it is and always has been.”

There are some crafts where progress isn’t about finding a new way of doing things, but becoming very good at the old one.

At Claire Langley’s Stamford workshop, Alan’s craft is traditional upholstery, using methods and materials refined and handed down over generations.

He knows his craft, takes pride in doing it well, and sees little reason to interfere with something that has already been worked out so beautifully.

Sometimes good craftsmanship is simply knowing what is worth keeping.

If you missed our sell-out supper with Fern over the summer, we have good news.

We’re doing it all again next Thursday at the Notswolds’ leading fine art gallery, Gladwell & Patterson.

The same seasonal small plates, British aperitifs and generous hospitality that made the first one so special, in a new setting, and with another table to fill.

Here’s a little taste of our last supper - a night nobody seemed to want to end.

Tickets via the link in bio. There’s a seat with your name on it.

Few might expect to find one of Britain’s finest collections of artists’ materials hidden in a pretty courtyard in rural Lincolnshire.

Living and working as an artist in the countryside, where Cholmeley family have spent the last 25 years restoring Easton Walled Gardens, Griffin of Easton has grown from Monty Cholmeley’s eye for exceptional materials.

In a part of the country where artists have often looked to London and beyond for specialist suppliers, it has quickly built a reputation as a destination for beautiful papers, pigments, paints and brushes from some of the world’s finest makers.

Throughout September, the shop sits at the heart of Easton Art Month, marking 25 years since the restoration of Easton Walled Gardens.

Alongside exhibitions, workshops, talks and demonstrations celebrating creativity in all its forms, you’ll also have the rare opportunity to see Adam Dant’s original Welcome to the Notswolds map on display throughout the month, and a very special opportunity to join Adam and I for a Q&A on the making of the map on Thursday 10 September. RSVP to Easton Walled Gardens to let us know you can come.

“It wasn’t until I was living and working for a digital design agency in Miami, where I stumbled across the most amazing traditional printmaking workshop downstairs from my apartment. That was where I really got into letterpress and had the chance to experiment, create my own prints and, I suppose, properly fall in love with it.”

Letterpress works within a limited set of variables: typeface, size, spacing and colour. There’s not much to play with, which is precisely where the skill lies. It takes a sharp graphic eye to turn those constraints into something spectacular.

It can look deceptively simple. Until you try to do it yourself, and realise quite how much time, judgement and skill goes into getting it right, as those who joined our letterpress workshop in June will know!

Lucy of Green Machine Creative is a master of exactly that: making something with very few ingredients feel completely her own.

What an incredible first weekend for The Makers Room.

We’ve loved seeing so many people through the doors, discovering the work and the makers behind it, and seeing such a strong response to the collection.

And this Friday, we’re taking the show on the road.

We’d planned to be in the gallery in person, but instead you’ll find John and me at Burghley Horse Trials, joining Gladwell & Patterson on their stand with a small selection of work from the room.

Come and join us for a drink:

Friday 4 September | 2–4pm

And if you haven’t made it to The Maker’s Room yet, you’ll find the full collection at Gladwell & Patterson in Stamford throughout September.

You might have noticed something a little different at Gladwell’s Corner…

A few familiar faces, figures and creatures from Welcome to the Notswolds, our illustrated map of the region, have spilled out of the map and across the gallery windows.

The display coincides with the Burghley Horse Trials Window Competition. It didn’t feel entirely fair to enter this year, given that we were also on the judging panel. But we couldn’t resist bringing William Cecil, the visionary behind Burghley House, back to the streets of Stamford.

Alongside him, you’ll find Isaac Newton and his prism, the Rutland Sea Dragon and Dame Laura Knight, part of the curious cast that makes up the map.

And with The Maker’s Room opening upstairs at Gladwell & Patterson tomorrow, Thursday 27 August, the timing couldn’t have been better.

A little bit of the Notswolds, inside and out.

With thanks to Gladwell & Patterson for providing this incredible canvas and Productive Design for helping to make our rather ambitious plans for the windows a reality.
