St Marys Space

St Marys Space Church recording studio in rural Scotland. Record productions happen here with hermit Jamie Smith.

St Mary's houses an innovative and versatile open plan recording studio, and is home to composer and producer Jamie Smith. Although unconventional, the all-in-one room style of studio (pioneered by Peter Gabriel at Realworld and adopted by Paul Epworth at The Church) has many advantages over very dead 70’s type studios, not least the speed and ease with which we can achieve superb results. Overdub

bing can be done in the conventional way, but with excellent communication between performers, producer and engineer the studio comes into its own when musicians play together in this beautiful acoustic. Often working in the intersection between sound art and music, Jamie is known for his ability to bring a sound world vividly to life, be that as part of a music project, film score or even his own unique immersive audio projects such as the sonic novel, 'Notes from a Tremulous Hand'. Welcome to my world.
After 8 years on here, I thought maybe it’s time I formally introduced myself. I’m Jamie, a composer, producer, sound artist, musical explorer, and ‘brilliant recluse’ / curmudgeonly hermit - depending on mood and how close to lunchtime it is. From the cutting edge of British experimental music to "Gaelic noir™", long-form maximalist chamber punk, and even occasionally “the Pops”, I love exploring musical hinterlands, backwaters, slums and cathedrals - my career thus far has been anything but ordinary.
You've likely heard my work—I’ve composed music for theatre, dance, film, TV (BBC, Channel 4, 6 Music), and radio. I also spent years bothering guitar as half of the cult avant-punk trio Misterlee.🎸
Since 2011, I’ve been the co-owner of St Mary's Space, a recording studio run from our havershambling church home, offering a peaceful refuge for likeminded musicians/co-conspirators, where chaotic and mystical energies of creation are harnessed and unleashed on the world (weekdays 9-5 only). 🏡🎶
Got a weird, wonderful, or boundary-pushing project in mind? Get in touch. The weirder the better—my creativity thrives on the unusual…
Dive into my wildly varied sound world and prepare to be moved, surprised, and immersed.
Share the love, if you have any for me👇and Mum, please don’t comment again. It’s embarrassing.

It was an absolute treat capturing Roo & Neil's musical wizardry earlier this year for this fabulous collection of tunes.
Check the album out on bandcamp tomorrow, and come see them here in concert on Sept 11th.....

‘Play it Again’ launches at midday tomorrow on bandcamp! In this live double-album we’ve shone a light on our love of tunes, playing them without prior arrangements and leaving space for the melodies to speak for themselves.

It was a total joy to record in the wonderful acoustics of St Marys Space back in May and we can’t wait to share the music live in concert this month! Check out our website for more info.
