Fuelled by our love of good food, we’re experimenting with a traditional wood-fired pizza oven!🍕

With help from local young people from I love Oldham Virtual Schools programme and our , we’ve collected natural clay from our site and excess straw from our wheat harvest and moulded it into outdoor pizza oven🔥

We want local people and young people to feel connected to the natural environment and the food they eat. This has also allowed us to test traditional methods, re-use natural materials, actively learn and pass on skills, and - most importantly - have creative fun outdoors.

🍽Looking for an immersive, outdoor dining experience? Don’t miss our very special farm to fork feast at Northern Roots by Gwafuvegan Enjoy a three courses vegan meal and a selection of delicious drinks, all made using produce grown right here at the Urban Farm.

Only on Thurs 14th August 5:30pm – 7:30pm. Tickets £25 for local residents and £30 for general admission.

Northern Roots Young Creatives, Tamikka and Hassan, delivered a brilliant, playful session for Youth Voice at Spark Oldham last night.

Youth Voice are an impressive group of young people from and who meet weekly to discuss the things that matter most to them - and how they can make change.

Tamikka, Hassan and Chloe(who couldn’t be with us last night) designed the session to understand what young people would like to do, see and create at Northern Roots as we move towards opening new buildings and facilities in summer 2026, and to ask them what matters most to them.

From good coffee, games, and a safe space to hang out and socialise in, to the challenges of violence, discrimination and gaining employment, it was a privilege to see so many ideas and conversations flowing in the session. Thank you for hosting us guys 😊

Northern Roots Young Creatives is a paid, 9-week programme designed to enable young people (18-24) from Oldham to curate and produce an entirely youth-led, youth-focused event for young people at Northern Roots this autumn. The event will take place on Sunday 21st September – so save the date, details coming soon!

Our three Young Creatives bring an incredible range of skills, experience, and energy to the programme. With the support of the Northern Roots team, they will develop new and existing skills across pitching and developing ideas, production, marketing and evaluation, and feed young people’s ideas and needs into our new Arts and Culture Strategy.

We have incredible young people in our communities. The future is bright.

Northern Roots Young Creatives is made possible by funding from Arts Council.

Thank you to artist Jo Blaker for bringing your creative flair to Northern Roots and helping us embrace and capture the beautiful nature on our site🎨

Arts and culture is a key pillar of the Northern Roots charity, and our site will continue to act as venue, inspiration, canvas and source of materials for arts and culture programming🎭

01/08/2025

We’re sad to announce that we have experienced repeated thefts of fruit trees from the Northern Roots Urban Farm over the last few months.

We’re working very hard to create the second phase of our Urban Farm, a productive 4-acre growing space full of healthy produce and fruit trees, where local people and visitors can experience growing, learn new skills, and connect to nature and food production.

A significant number of fruit trees have been stolen. Young fruit trees are expensive and can only be planted at certain times of the year, so the impact is long lasting. These trees were proudly planted by our hardworking volunteers and young people on placement from Positive Steps.

These fruit trees have been stolen not just from the Northern Roots charity, but also from the local community who were set to benefit in the future, from our funders and supporters, and from the wildlife and biodiversity these trees would have supported. If you have any information relating to the theft of the trees, please get in touch.

Northern Roots exists to transform neglected land into a destination that is ‘of’ the local people of Oldham, but for everyone. Work has begun on a brand-new Visitor Centre with café, shop, meeting space and adjacent amphitheatre, a Forestry Skills Centre and the Phase 2 Urban Farm, and will be opening to the public in summer 2026. We are creating inspirational spaces, moments and opportunities for people to connect around food, growing, nature, learning, creativity, sport, work and play.

We want to thank all of you for following our journey so far. Your support and passion for Northern Roots is heard and inspires our team daily.

Thank you,
Northern Roots
