We’ve had a visit from Recycle for Greater Manchester’s mascot!

At Northern Roots we’re proud to say re-using and recycling is embedded into all we do♻️

Staff food waste and cardboard is turned into compost and we use regenerative farming techniques for our produce. Trees that have been felled due to ash die back disease are turned into beautiful spaces. And all of our events are designed to leave-no-trace, so we have as little impact on the as possible🌱

We even have a composting toilet 🚽

‼️Workshop‼️Look, Collect & Gather Collage Workshop - Saturday 19 July (Next Saturday!) 12PM- 2PM 🌟🌟🌟

Inspired by ‘s current exhibition, we’re inviting visitors to come along to a walk and collage workshop inspired by his practice of making work with found objects!

ℹ️ Meet at 1853 Studios Mill 1 Door @ 12PM
🌳 We’ll go for a relaxed stroll, with an easy-going route around the area - taking photos and collecting discarded objects that take our fancy, like magpies!
🖼️ We’ll then return to the gallery, clean down our our found objects, print off any photographs we’ve taken, and collage them onto aluminium boards a bit like the ones Scott uses in his work! All of this whilst enjoying his current exhibition fourteen days!

💵 We’re charging £2 (which contributes to our Studio and Gallery project, and is mostly a test to see if it helps with footfall!) and you can take away your creations at the end!

Fascinated by bees? Want to learn more about bees and beekeeping? Step into a beekeepers suit with Hive5 Manchester for a two hour Beekeeping Experience at Northern Roots this coming Sunday 20th July! 🐝 🐝 🐝

Interested in seeing what it takes to be a beekeeper? Considering a new hobby or just curious about these marvellous creatures? Our penultimate experience of the year is taking place on 20th July at and there are spaces available.

During the 2hr experience you’ll put on a beesuit and be taken through a hive with Master Beekeeper Damson. You’ll have the opportunity to get hands on (if you wish!) and hold frames and bees. You’ll learn the difference between the queen, workers and drones; how to identify different brood types; how honey is made; how bees use pollen and nectar. We’ll also hopefully see the queen!

Join Hannah-May, founder of Hedge School, for an immersive introduction to the fascinating world of plants, folklore, wild food foraging and community herbalism.

Together you'll explore the woodland and forage, gather, and learn how to make hand-made herbal remedies and wild food recipes at home, and experience the flavours of our native larder.

This is a great opportunity for anyone curious about foraging throughout the ages and those looking to deepen their understanding of and relationship to the place they call home.

You’ll leave this session with a deeper connection to nature and seasonal herbal remedy recipes you can try at home. You’ll also get the chance to explore the Northern Roots Urban Farm, where produce is grown using regenerative techniques, alongside medicinal herbs and flowers.

Hannah-May is passionate about supporting communities to recover, reconnect and restore their relationships with kith and kin through the sharing of traditional skills, knowledge and unruly education.

Join chef Ngwafu Tansie, founder of Gwafuvegan for a very special farm to fork feast at Northern Roots!

The word for ‘feast’ in Cameroon varies, but ‘ndoh sasua’ is commonly used to refer to a large, celebratory meal. Inspired by her Cameroonian roots and the rich cuisine of West Africa, Ngwafu will create a delicious vegan ‘ndoh sasua’ celebrating produce grown on our Urban Farm.

Timings

5:30pm: Arrive for 5.30pm as the Urban Farm closes to the public.

5:30-6pm: Enjoy a welcome drink, listen to musician and master player Jali Nyonkoling Kuyateh play an acoustic set in the Community Garden, explore the Urban Farm.

6-7:30pm: Join a small number of fellow feasters for supper at the communal banquet tables in the Community Garden.

Ngwafu is the founder and chef of Gwafuvegan. Born in Cameroon, raised in the UK, Ngwafu is now based in Manchester, which in her opinion, is one of the best places to be vegan.

Try out bikes with Positive Cycles Oldham,
and adapted bikes with Ability Wheelz, and get your bike fixed for free with Bike Right.

Meet the donkeys and learn ‘how to groom’ a horse with West Pennine Bridleways Association, play chess and other games, and bring a picnic to our Picnic Zone.

🐞Tiny Nature Explorers at Northern Roots: Mon 21st July and Mon 11th August, 10.30am - 11.30am🌿

Bring your Tiny Nature Explorer (pre-school, 2-3 year old) to Northern Roots Urban Farm and connect with nature through creativity, activities and stories!

You might make a seed bomb or a nature crown, listen to a story in the Community Garden, plant some seeds or see what bugs and birds you can spot. If it’s a sunny day, why not bring a picnic and explore the wider Northern Roots site after your visit🌳🦋
