RIP Damian Casey πŸ™πŸ˜’

Just desperate news emerging this evening with the tragic passing of a Tyrone GAA Legend - arguably the greatest Tyrone Hurler we have ever seen - passing away with so much living still to be done.

Just weeks after starring in Tyrone’s all Ireland Nicky Rackard Cup Hurling title success, scoring a sensational 0-14 in that All Ireland final triumph, we sadly say goodbye to a GAA star who scored an incredible 38-908 in the Red Hand jersey since making his debut a decade ago, having started in every single Tyrone game (100+) since then πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

So sad to hear this news about one of our great Tyrone People, an absolute gentleman.

Sincerest sympathy to Damian’s family and friends, our thoughts and prayers are with you, and GAA colleagues both at Eoghan Ruadh Hurling Club and in the Tyrone camp at this very difficult time πŸ™

Michaela McAreavey (nee Harte) was such a wonderful young lady, beautiful both inside and out, whose faith and kindness were overwhelmingly known to anyone who met her. RIP πŸ™

Now widely seen everywhere last night was a video displaying the most horrible, nasty and pathetic minds of depraved humanity. Where have human beings minds taken them that they view this as part of any culture?

Having watched the video we can’t share the video itself - it is horrendous. A vile action filled with hatred and bitterness. All against a young woman who was brutally murdered on her honeymoon. Her amazing family of faith have had to awaken to this uproar today knowing the only reason it happened was because she was a young catholic woman. πŸ₯²πŸ₯²

Expect widespread condemnation to follow from all sane, balanced people with a conscience.

This hatred and bitterness must stop!!!!

Brilliant goal and victory in Kerry sets up hugely exciting Ulster & All Ireland SFC title defence for TYRONE πŸ’ͺ

You will do well to find more direct attacking football than this - Niall Morgan with a huge kick out, Darragh Canavan with a brilliant catch & sublime pass into Darren McCurry who again displays his unerring class with that turn, burst and finish to the corner of the Kerry net!

Tyrone GAA have finished the league by beating Mayo & Kerry (securing Division 1 status) - Roll on the Championship defence πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘ŒπŸ‡΅πŸ‡±

Tyrone GAA legend Peter Canavan and Errigal Ciaran club gather momentum for GAA to bring a return to Under 18 format! AGREED!

Fair play to Errigal Ciaran GAA. Have yet to hear a positive argument for the Under 17 & proposed Under 19 trial grade, which simply do not work in the manner they were expected to. Here's hoping this motion at this weekend's GAA Congress is passed. πŸ‘πŸ‘

BRING BACK the Under 18 Grade - read more πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

The under-17 and under-20 competition's have not captured the GAA public's imagination quite like their predecessors.

And that goes for both club and inter-county competitions. Under-12, 14, 16, 18 and 21 age-grades were in place for the guts of 60 years, between 1964 and 2018, and while they weren't perfect - how could they have been when, unlike any other sports, GAA players play in a number of different competitions, for a number of different teams, at the one time - but they were still better than what we have now.

With GAA congress only around the corner, the time for change is now. But the GAA are going the wrong way about it. The central council could be about to make the thing even worse with their motion to bring in an under-19 inter-county grade in 2023. It would be ran alongside the under-20 championship that year - before one of them would be dropped for the next year - but aside from that carnage, the real issue is this.

Minor and under-21 were two tremendous championships that were and valued by all players and supporters. What is the point in getting rid of one of them so underage players only have one chance to represent their county?

Age-grade at club and county level, obviously, go hand-in-hand with one influencing the other and that's why Tyrone club Errigal Ciaran's motion to allow counties to decide on their own underage grades is a huge one. The club, for whom Peter Canavan is the vice-chairperson, sent an email to clubs around Ireland on Tuesday explaining their reasons behind the motion, and the reason they have no faith in that under-19 age-grade.

"We understand that when the change was made to 15, 17, 19, that the intention was that it would improve player pathway with a meaningful U-19 competition key to that success. But, as was called out at the time, the overlap of U-19 with senior/reserves is too great and it is almost impossible to play a prolonged competition at U-19 club level,” the letter stated.

β€œA particular concern are the perceived weaker lads, who may never enter an adult dressing-room in any event, but who enjoy the training and camaraderie during their underage career,” the letter continued.

"For many lads, their underage club careers are over by their fifth year at school. No underage hurling or football by sixth year, it seems a crazy position."

"We all know two or three lads who are physically developed at that age and can compete. But what about the 10 or 12 who can't? What's left for them? A few under-19 games at the end of the summer if they're lucky."

β€œAt that critical age of 17, their networks are closed a year earlier, from 18 down to 17 years of age. Some of these lads will go on to be the best administrators our clubs ever had, others will drop out as they lose the connection with the club,” the Club Statement continued.

Tyrone Father faces off against son in bid for 2022 MacRory Cup Final place on Friday night.

On Friday night in the Athletic Grounds (7.30pm) in the Ulster Schools GAA Macrory Cup semi final, a Father V Son showdown is very much on the cards.

John McElholm (Manager with St. Mary's Grammar School, Magherafelt) will manage his schools side against Omagh CBS where his son Eoin Mcelholm is one of the star players in their forward line. McElholm who starred for the Tyrone GAA minors in their March to the All Ireland Minor final in 2021 is again seen as an integral player again in the 2022 Tyrone Minor squad as they will soon prepare for an Ulster title defence. But on Friday night he will be hoping to shoot his father and his Magherafelt charges out of the elite provincial schools competition.

In recent months, John McElholm managed Eoin and his Lough Macrory GAA clubmates to the Tyrone GAA minor Grade 1 football championship final, and has largely managed his son Eoin through the juvenile top ranks in Tyrone. John McElholm also managed the Loch Mhic RuairΓ Naomh Treasa GAA team to the mid Tyrone club’s only ever Grade 1 Tyrone juvenile title 3 years ago winning the Tyrone Under 14 championship title, where John managed and his son Eoin was captain - and now they are in opposite camps for the Macrory showdown with a provincial decider on the cards for one of them.
