Sunset Threshold 🌅🏃‍♂️

Took advantage of the stunning sunset for a quick threshold session: 4 × 800m at a comfortably hard effort (RPE 6–7) with 1 min recovery, focusing on keeping the pace controlled and consistent throughout.

With some lower back tightness over the past few days, I skipped this week’s SLD run and made sure not to push beyond limits in speed training either. Tonight was also my first run in the new Nike Alphafly 3 — a little awkward at first, but the bouncy foam does seem to ease the joint impact. Planning to try them on a long run soon to see if they’re race-day compatible.

Despite the almost freezing temperature, it turned out to be a solid session — strong pace, sensible effort, and a sunset worth running for. 🌥️✨

My longest swim session yet!

Only my third time at the club’s weekly swim training and I’ve already logged my longest swim—longer than what I did for my first triathlon. With guidance from our coach and a friendly club mate, I’m finally getting the hang of the sessions, completing both the warm-up drills and the main set. Some drills need basic swim gear, so it might be time to invest since I see myself coming regularly. Still lots to refine with the basics, but training with like-minded people—and the discipline that comes with it—makes every session worth it.

Living out a childhood dream.

Definitely not a SIMPLE performance, but such an explosive and PERFECT one from my most favourite pop punk band, Simple Plan! I was JUST A KID when I first heard their songs—some of which have become my ever favourites and karaoke go-to’s—so it was quite an emotional first encounter and a dream-come-true to finally see them perform live! I JUMPed a few times, and Pierre, the band’s vocalist, sounded just as good in person as in the recordings. The entire performance was simply outstanding for me.

How lucky did I feel being able to listen to literally almost all of my favourite and ICONIC songs of theirs live! I can definitely say that their music is WHERE I BELONG. I’m still feeling a bit of a JETLAG from the show and can’t SHUT UP!, singing their songs in my head over and over again—yet I’D DO ANYTHING to see them again, not as a front act but as their main concert, because they absolutely deserve one! Despite the temptation to resell my ticket for another important but conflicting event, I’m glad I didn’t—I truly felt I made the right decision. This concert experience definitely brought me to a SUMMER PARADISE with them.

Finally back!

Running in the rain tonight felt like quite the welcome back after a couple of weeks off.

We eased in with warm-up laps and dynamic stretches before a main set of 10k-pace loops, then rounds of 600m hard and 200m easy until time was up. It was probably the wettest track session I’ve had, with steady rain right before the main set — but I was happy with how I held up: no abdominal issues, just a mild hip ni**le reminding me to step up my strength work with my major event coming up.

Grateful for the energy of the club, the like-minded people I get to train with, and the chance to keep showing up despite life’s chaos. 🌧️🏃‍♂️

Wednesday Swim 🏊‍♂️

Managed to squeeze in a session after a long day at work, which kicked off with a speedy cycle to the leisure centre. It’s only my second time joining the club’s swim session, but this one was already such an enjoyable experience — filled with a mix of swimming drills and learning moments as I’m still getting used to how the session runs.

The highlight for me was finally learning how to properly perform even the basic front crawl! A few drills involving somersaults and dolphin kicks left me a bit dizzy towards the end (perhaps not the best pre-fuelling on my part 😅), but it was all worth it. Definitely glad I made the last-minute decision to join — looking forward to making this a regular part of my week. 💦

Daytime Long Run 🌤️

Finally back into a daytime SLD run on a weekend after quite some time and after week of rest from running— this one focused on achieving a negative split. It’s always tempting to train during the day, but with busy schedules and errands lately, it hasn’t been easy to squeeze in. Glad I finally managed to enjoy a run under daylight again!

My goal was to complete a few loops around my favourite parks in town whilst practising pacing discipline. I started off in Zone 2, guided by heart rate, and picked up the pace on the second half based on RPE — surprisingly, even with a faster pace, my HR stayed within or just slightly above Zone 2 at the start. The negative split worked well: starting slow, building momentum, and finishing strong.

Running mostly on softer park grounds instead of cobblestones or pavement also felt kinder on the joints, and the autumn views made every stride worthwhile. Training earlier in the day also meant a better recovery window — and a longer, deeper sleep at night. 🍂🏃‍♂️

Most runners downplay their marathon finish like it's no big deal. The math suggests you accomplished something that over 99% of humans never will.

Despite marathons gaining mainstream popularity, fewer than 1% of Earth's population will ever complete 26.2 miles. Approximately 1.1-1.3 million marathon finishes are recorded globally each year, but many represent repeat participants rather than unique finishers. From 2000-2022, only 10-13 million individuals completed at least one marathon, representing roughly 0.13-0.16% of the global population.

Here's the physiological reality behind these numbers: completing a marathon requires months of progressive aerobic adaptation that most people simply won't commit to. Research from Dr. Jack Daniels shows that marathon training demands consistent weekly mileage, proper periodization, and the mental fortitude to push through discomfort that makes most quit.

Simply put: marathon finishing isn't rare because it's impossible - it's rare because it requires sustained discipline over months when immediate gratification culture conditions people to quit uncomfortable things.

Unfortunately, social media makes marathon running look common because runners congregate in echo chambers where everyone's completing races. This distorts the perception of how unusual this achievement actually is.

The good news? Finishing a marathon represents concrete evidence of your capacity to commit to long-term goals despite difficulty - a trait that transfers to every life domain.

The bottom line? Your marathon finish isn't just a fitness accomplishment. It's statistical proof that you accomplished something 99% of humans won't, demonstrating discipline and perseverance most people never develop.
