Race Pace Fartlek 🏃‍♂️✨

The day has finally come—yesterday marked the end of 6 months of training that spanned three continents, four countries, and eight cities. What a journey.

This final session was a race-pace fartlek, alternating between marathon pace and conversational pace. My original marathon pace set by Runna at the start of the programme was 6:15/km, but by the end of the session I was able to comfortably lock into my new and ideal target pace of ~5:40/km. That said, the purpose of my first major marathon remains the same: enjoy the moment, reach the finish line, and stay injury-free.

A special way to wrap up the programme—catching a glimpse of the tip of Mt Matutum for the first time during the run, which I’m taking as a sign of good luck 🍀. Strava tagged this as a solid marathon training run, with most of the time spent in the threshold zone, yet my relative effort stayed steady despite the faster average pace.

Still running with runna, and what made this session extra special was the tailored music recommendation—absolutely spot on for this kind of workout 🎶. Gear-wise, running in my original race shoes felt extra meaningful: light, comfortable, and familiar. Sadly, the rear foam of my official race-day shoes chipped slightly whilst washing—unexpected, but hopefully with minimal impact on race day.

Session breakdown:
• 1.5 km warm-up (conversational pace)
• 2 km @ 6:15/km (initial target marathon pace)
• 1 km super easy recovery
• 2 km @ target pace
• 1 km cool-down (conversational pace)

Feeling slightly under the weather, but hoping to hit the start line feeling much better. On to race day. 💪🏁
