CROATIAN PEOPLE - DID YOU KNOW THIS ??? πŸ˜³πŸ˜³πŸ‡πŸ‡·πŸ‡«πŸ‡·
This is a beautiful example of a β€œreborrowing” - when a word is borrowed from one language into another, changes a bit in meaning, and then borrowed back into the original language! Can you think of any more in the comments?

Is the name β€˜Istanbul’ originally from the greek language? πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡· πŸ‡¬πŸ‡· 🧐

This is one of the most popular theories as to the origin of the city’s name. It would make a lot of sense to me, especially since many greek people (especially elderly people) still refer to Istanbul as simply β€œΞ· Ο€ΟŒΞ»Ξ·β€ (β€œthe city”) today ! πŸ™

Remember that this word is just one example of many thousands of words shared by both the Turkish and greek language. Centuries of living together meant that Turks, Greeks, Armenians and many other peoples ended up converging in many ways culturally and even linguistically! ❀️

Recent history has been horrifically violent but must not erase the fraternity that these peoples developed over these centuries, a fraternity still reflected in their languages πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·β€οΈπŸ‡ΉπŸ‡·

IF ROMANIAN EXPRESSIONS WERE LITERAL … πŸ‡·πŸ‡΄β€”>πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

I’ve been learning Romanian for a couple of years now and I absolutely love this language πŸ˜† BUT when romanians speak to each other, particularly in informal contexts, they use SO MANY idiomatic expressions which don’t make any sense if you try to translate them word for word… πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

Today I had the help of an extremely talented actor and dancer - and good friend of mine - to help me learn what these expressions really mean … πŸ‡·πŸ‡΄

Big thanks again :))
