The Number plates of Jay Kay’s Insane car collection !

From Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and a Porsche 918 Spyder - the music legend is a car enthusiast but you might not know he is a large UK personalised number plate collector with over 20+ in his ownership

Most famous of the personalised registrations is Disco on his Lamborghini Purple Ferrari F355 GTS

Interestingly, the private registration is D1 SKC with a black number plate screw to make it look like an O

Though some would argue his most famous number plate is actually N77 LAM which appeared in the Jamiroquai Cosmic Girl music video

Although sold, his 1 of 1 Green La Ferrari was registered with 22 Jet and his Black Ferrari Enzo (with green interior) had the prefix format plate V17 JET

While his Ferrari F40 has the private plate F4 OJK representing the car model and his initials

His Alfa Romeo 8C has the perfect prefix registration RED 8C and on the Japanese front his Honda S2000 has the number plate S200 CUP

Even his Aston Martin DB5 has a private plate, with SPY 288C a nod to his love of James Bond

Some he likely bought at the DVLA auction, some he bought privately

How a number plate flipped my life upside down…

I’m Kit creator of Number Plate History - a social media channel dedicated to telling the stories and market results of UK cherished registrations

Over the past 2 years, posting videos has led me to a community of petrol heads and UK private plate enthusiasts

This my 100th video serves as a little recap and reintroduction of me, the man who left his job to pursue telling the stories of plates

I can’t believe I’ve been lucky enough to be involved, let alone run plate meets and work with cars like a Bugatti - and it’s all thanks to you the community for following along

This UK Number Plate is over 120 years old !?

D 88 was first issued in 1903 and was one of Kent’s first ever number plates with the area code D representing the area, issued by Kent County Council. It’s first owner was Edgar Elliot who registered it to a steam car locomotive on the 8th December 1903.

Amongst other UK personalised number plates, D 88 is a dateless format known as original issues with letters before numbers, resulting from the Motor Car Act of 1903

For personalised registrations like these, area codes were given by area populous so London got plates such as the famous A 1 and Essex got the registration F 1

Number plate values are impacted by a few things including format, length, initials, and numbers. D 88 is a grail number plate for a few reasons:

1. Format. Original Issue with the preferred letters first
2. Initial popularity. ‘D’ is one of the most popular initials in the UK
3. Number. 88 has cultural significance globally. In Chinese culture is means double happiness and in numerology it’s a symbol for financial prosperity

In 1974 the dateless format private plate was owned by a Mr Donald who owned the reg for a documented 34 years between 1974 and 2008

By October of 2008, the cherished registration was sold for an undisclosed amount to a Mr Davidson who assigned it from new to a Porsche 911 997.1 GT2

Where it lived for the next 18 years in private ownership until mid 2026 when the pair was sold to its current owner

The private number plate has since been retained and is exclusively for sale through myself.

This Number plate hasn’t changed owners in 25 years !

And has just sourced and sold it to its new owner

BS 1 was first issued on the 21st January 1904 to William MacLennan who assigned it to his 8 horsepower Peugeot Car

BS 3 was Orkney’s first ever number plate with the area code BS representing the Orkney area, registered to a Motorcycle

Whereas BS 6 was the first car number plate

By 1912, the reg was assigned to a 9 HP Airex Car that was sold on June 8th to Dr John McEwan

And it traded hands between a variety of owners throughout the 1920s

Come 1930, the plate had come into the ownership of John MF Groat of Moasound

He kept the Private plate for approximately 30 years before it left for Sheffield

Bob Stanley owned his grail initial number plate for a few years before a number plate iconic Billy Smart picked it up

He managed to acquire the UK plates BS 1 and FU 2 - a serial plate collector

These are all know as original issues with letters before numbers, resulting from the Motor Car Act of 1903

And BS 1 became embedded in a pop culture when Roger Moore drove an Aston Martin with the number in the persuaders

Billy Smart owned the plate for 30 years until it was sold in august of 2001 - moving it back to Orkney

Where it stayed for 25 years until helped find it a new owner

And lives on a Bugatti Chiron

The Sultan of Brunei has UK Number Plates Worth Millions !?

The car legends need no introduction but his brother Prince Jefri Bokiah of Brueni owns some of the most expensive UK personalised private plates in the United Kingdom

Aside from the Sultan of Brunei’s infamous car collection

A 1 was first issued on the 9th December 1903 to Earl Russell who assigned it to his Napier Car and thus A 1 became London’s first ever number plate with the area code A representing the area

By 1907, the reg was assigned to the car of the chairman of the London County Council and then sold the personalised registration later for £30

1 A was the most expensive number sold by hammer in the DVLA’s first ever number plate auction which took place at Christie’s London in 1989 where 74 lots were sold. 1 A sold for £160,000 (£202,400 after fees)

Come the mid 1990’s, and the private number plates were bought by the Price as a pair for an undisclosed amount likely between 1995 or 1996

Although unclear, the prince also managed to acquire the cherished registrations 1 XX , 1 JB , 1 PB , 1 HB , NO 1 , and JB 3 - meaning he is quite the plate collector

A 1 and JB 3 are known as original issues with letters before numbers, resulting from the Motor Car Act of 1903 whereas 1 A is known as an auction issue

But A1 and 1A are unique as they have stayed at pair for over 30 years, and continue to reside in the Prince’s cherished number plate collection - very rarely coming out, kept in private ownership

A 1 is widely regarded as the first number plate in the United Kingdom but this in fact is wrong as it’s actually DY 1 which was issued on November 23rd 1903 in Hastings

The registration A 1 was been seen registered to a Mini, Rover Stirling, Range Rover Classic, Bentleys, and Jaguars whilst 1 A has been registered to everything from a Nissan 300 ZX to a Bentley Continental R

A number plate worth more than the car !?

L 67 was first issued in January 1904 and was one of Glamorganshire’s first ever number plates with the area code L representing the area

By early 2025, the reg was assigned to a Fiat 500

And by late 2025 it was on a Porsche 911 after selling at auction for £55,000

Come to the present day and the plate now is temporarily in my ownership

L 67 is being lent to me by a very kind follower of the channel is a plate collector and friend. It is utmost kind of them to allow me the opportunity and I am very grateful

Amongst other UK plates, L 67 is a dateless format known as original issues with letters before numbers, resulting from the Motor Car Act of 1903

For cherished registrations like these, area codes were given by area populous so London got plates such as the famous A 1 and Essex registration F 1

Paired with the Porsche Boxster, this has now achieved peak plate worth > car worth

A very fun combination of car and number plate to run for a few months
