Fun fact about our tree-of-the-month, the field elm (Ulmus minor): because of its tight, twisted, water-resistant grain, and before metal was widely available, many English towns (including Bristol, Reading, Exeter, Southampton, Hull, and Liverpool) had elm water mains.

We've just tipped into the second half of the year and it's time once again to flip your Holywell desk calendar to July. This month celebrates the field elm (Ulmus minor), whose wood is strong and durable, with a tight, twisted, water-resistant grain. Historically, elm wood has been used to make boats, furniture, floorboards, and coffins.
