As Cornwall marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, one woman’s memories of being sent from London to Penryn as a four-year-old war evacuee reveal the quiet, everyday courage that underpinned the war effort far from the beaches of Normandy.
Now aged 90, in September 1940, four-year-old Maureen Hornsby was put on a train at Paddington Station with a luggage label and a small suitcase, bound for a town she had never heard of. She told us all about it on a visit down to Cornwall and her old stomping grounds.
