Hugo Winder-Lind is a contemporary artist who effortlessly weaves profound concepts into his art. His most recent endeavor, a book titled "The Telepathic Field," offers readers an intimate glimpse into the multifaceted artistic ideas that have been brewing within his creative mind. This travel journal-cum-artistic manifesto takes us on a journey through animism, telepathy, time travel, identity, youth, and aging, all encapsulated within the vibrant tapestry of his artistic expressions.

In a recent residency at Troze Gallery, Hugo found himself immersed in the inspiring landscapes of Cornwall – a stark contrast to the urban vibrancy of Brighton. The juxtaposition of the rugged beauty of Penwith against the chalky surroundings of Brighton played a pivotal role in shaping his creative process.

To mark the culmination of his residency, Hugo presents his End of Residency Exhibition. The collection of 21 paintings showcases his journey through Cornwall's terrain, on display until September 2nd. The private viewing is this Friday at 6pm and provides an opportunity to connect with Hugo and gain insights into his artistic process.

Through film and ceramics, ’s Substrata delves into the complexities of consumption, decay, and everyday life. Exploring domestic practices and the inescapable nature of consumption, this thought-provoking work reflects on the portrayal of food in reality TV and the tensions between life and death. The film captures performances, domestic spaces, distorted photocopies, wildlife, and landscapes, accompanied by a stream of consciousness narration. Translated into a captivating book with transcripts and photography, the vessels crafted from local clays interact chemically with their surroundings, creating unique finishes.

Drawing inspiration from both internal and external landscapes, his monochromatic, minimalist work incorporates sourced and repurposed materials from the natural environment and borderlands. The juxtaposition of salvaged remnants of inorganic matter with organic elements creates nuanced relationships, serving as allegories for psychological and emotional states. Through this process, forms are distilled to a liminal threshold, blurring the line between the abstract and the concrete. Within ’s recent paintings, figuration takes a backseat as he embraces an abstract mindset, incorporating motifs from historical dramas, Holbein paintings, folklore, literature, and mythology. ’s focus lies in fragments of literature, myth, and history, as he pieces together Roman Gods, cowboys, and creatures from Japanese folklore to create unconventional and jarring narratives. His semi-abstract approach merges figuration in a heraldic, patchwork style, allowing me to explore colour relationships and pattern-making in a dynamic way.
