It’s your last chance to see Tony Nero's wonderful art exhibition atPeterborough Museum & Art Gallery

What a ray of sunshine Tony is on a rainy day! We popped in to see how his exhibition Half a Pencil has been going and caught the man himself doing a few sketches.

Tony says he’s had an amazing response with some visitors telling him how he’s inspired them to start drawing again.

This guy is a real talent for the city to be proud of. It’s surprising just how many styles and techniques he uses to create an array of amazing artworks – there’s bound to be something you’ll love.

There are famous faces and local faces – like his stunning image of local legend Eddie Nash a city DJ many of you will instantly recognise – as well as mixed media, miniatures and stunning pieces even on spray cans.

If you’re in the city centre or popping in for a shop, please make sure you drop in for a quick look as the exhibition ends on Saturday.

Need some laughs to beat the January blues? ESP's film critic Gavin Miller checks out the comedy reboot of Anaconda...

FILM REVIEW: ANACONDA (12A) ESP RATING: 2.5/5

This action-comedy meta-reboot of the cult classic giant snake movie doesn’t quite go ‘all in’ with what it’s trying so hard to be.
It throws a lot of ideas at the wall, but only some stick, and some slither off.

This does have a handful of funny comedic moments – which you’d expect with Jack Black and Paul Rudd in the lead roles – but isn’t as clever as the idea is attempting to accomplish. Almost a bit Jumanji-ish in ex*****on.

A midlife crisis inspires frustrated ex-filmmaker Doug (Black), his failing actor best friend Griff (Rudd) and close pals – recovering addict Kenny (Steve Zahn) and unlucky-in-love Claire (Thandiwe Newton) – to remake their favourite film from their youth in the Amazon rainforest. The iconic (if hard to call a classic) Jennifer Lopez/Ice Cube/Jon Voight-led 1997 horror-thriller Anaconda.

But things go awry when the large snake they are using for their low-budget indie film is accidentally killed – and they then inexplicably attempt to find another one to finish the movie. And they also get embroiled in gang-related gold-trafficking – involving Daniela Melchior’s fugitive Ana – in the process.

The expected comedy hi-jinks ensue as they are all stalked by a gigantic predator – that is even bigger than in the original film – but it all plays out somewhat underwhelmingly with intermittent pockets of fun.

By the close a film that was clearly aiming for something quite innovative ends up being disappointingly formulaic, but a ‘game’ cast – mixed with some humorous interludes and decent jump scares – does make it a watchable slice of cinematic entertainment.

Even though it clearly lacks the gloriously venomous bite of ingenuity it was so sorely striving for.

ESP Rating: 2.5/5

It’s game on at last as a new leisure venue in Peterborough has finally been given the go ahead.

Work is starting now on The No Work Club Peterborough which will bring together escape rooms, axe throwing, crazy golf and immersive experiences, all under one roof.

It’s situated above the Blind Tiger Tap & Kitchen near Notcutts on Ham Lane.

After a long running campaign and previous refusals the planning permission has now been granted and the owners intend to be ready to open in time for the Easter holidays.

Founded by Peterborough entrepreneur Tom Owen, The No Work Club builds on the success of the already established site in Lincoln and represents the brand’s next major expansion.

“This moment makes all the perseverance worth it,” said Tom Owen, Founder of The No Work Club.

“Planning permission means we can finally crack on. The build starts immediately, and we’re working flat out to open in time for the Easter holidays. We’ve already seen how well this concept works in Lincoln, and now we’re bringing something even bigger to Peterborough.”

The venue is expected to create new local jobs, boost footfall in the surrounding area and attract visitors from across the region.

It's the weather for hunkering down with a good movie! ESP reviewer Mike Clarke is batting for Marty Supreme...

FILM REVIEW: MARTY SUPREME (15) ESP RATING: 4.5/5

Ambition has rarely looked this frantic – or this exhausting – on screen.

I almost made the same mistake with Marty Supreme that I once made with Whiplash.

I remember thinking: ‘Why would I go and see a film about a drummer when I have no interest in drumming?’ That film completely floored me and now comfortably sits among my top films of all-time.

So yes, I could very easily have looked at Marty Supreme and thought: ‘Why would I go and see a film centred around table tennis?’ But I didn’t. I went in with an open mind –
and I absolutely loved it.

Directed by Josh Safdie, one-half of the filmmaking duo behind Uncut Gems, Marty Supreme is very much cut from the same cloth.
This is a sweaty, high-stress, relentlessly-paced character study that uses sport as a backdrop rather than the main event. Table tennis just happens to be the arena in which this story unfolds; at its heart, this is about obsession, ego, and a young man’s all-consuming need to be ‘somebody’.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet (Dune, Wonka) as Marty, a fictionalised take on legendary real-life table tennis hustler Marty Reisman. We meet Marty scraping by on raw talent, bravado and sheer nerve – bouncing between dingy clubs, smoky back rooms and underground tournaments where pride and cash are always on the line. As his reputation grows, so does his ego, pulling him into increasingly risky situations – bad deals, toxic relationships and self-sabotaging decisions that threaten to undo everything he’s fighting for.

Chalamet throws himself into the role with ferocity. This isn’t the soft-spoken, romantic version we’ve seen elsewhere – this Marty is twitchy, abrasive, arrogant and often deeply unpleasant. And that’s exactly the point. His ambition is so overwhelming that it leaves very little room for empathy, loyalty or self-reflection.

Interestingly, there are very few people to root for here. You don’t walk out thinking: ‘Oh, so-and-so seems lovely – I’d like to be more like them’. Everyone on screen is selfish. Everyone is flawed. Almost everyone is awful in their own way. Everything goes wrong, often through sheer stubbornness and pride. And somehow, that only makes the experience more compelling.

If the tone feels familiar, that’s because the closest comparison really is Uncut Gems. The same clenched-jaw tension runs through every scene. Conversations overlap and collide. The music pulses aggressively beneath the dialogue. The camera rarely sits still, constantly hovering just a little too close for comfort. It’s exhausting – but in the best possible way. You’re not calmly watching events unfold so much as being dragged headfirst through Marty’s spiralling mindset.

What really struck me is how much love is poured into every aspect of the filmmaking. Every shot feels intentional. Every casting choice feels exact. The sound design and score keep you permanently on edge, amplifying Marty’s internal chaos. It’s messy, loud, stressful – and thrilling.

This is very clearly a passion project, and it shows. It’s also no coincidence that Marty Supreme has landed during awards season. This is the kind of bold, divisive, performance-driven film that voters often rally around, and will feature heavily in the conversation over the coming weeks.

You don’t need to care about table tennis to care about this film. Just like Whiplash, the subject matter is almost irrelevant. What matters is the fire underneath it – the desperation, the hunger, and the cost of wanting greatness at any price.

And despite the two and a half hours runtime – it absolutely flew by.

Expect award nominations for this to ping-pong from all over Hollywood and beyond – as this is supremely gripping.

Here’s an event guaranteed to brighten up the winter days as the sun is set to shine in Peterborough Cathedral...

The latest visiting installation by artist Luke Jerram, Helios, will illuminate the cathedral from February 10-28.

It follows his other amazing works – Museum of the Moon, Gaia and Mars – all of which have been stunning displays and have attracted thousands of visitors.

Suspended in the air and seven metres in diameter, this awe-inspiring, internally illuminated sculpture will offer visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Sun at an extraordinary level of detail and scale.

“We are absolutely delighted to be hosting Helios at Peterborough Cathedral,” said Gary Cowling, Events Manager at Peterborough Cathedral. “Luke Jerram’s installations have captivated our visitors time and again, and following the tremendous success of Museum of the Moon, Gaia and Mars here at the Cathedral, we are confident that Helios will be just as inspiring and memorable for all who come to see it.”

The installation also features a specially commissioned surround-sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson, blending birdsong, choral textures, global musical influences, manipulated fire recordings and NASA mission audio.

Rooted in ancient Greek mythology, the artwork takes its name from Helios, the Sun god who drove his four-horse chariot across the sky each day, bringing light, seasons and the rhythm of life to the world.

Helios will be open to the public by suggested donation during regular Cathedral visiting hours. An accompanying programme of events is soon to be announced, offering further opportunities to explore the science, mythology and artistry behind the work.

The exhibition has been made possible by sponsorship through Peterborough Positive’s Small Grants Scheme.

Pep Cipriano, Chief Operating Officer at Peterborough Positive said – “Supporting Helios through our Small Grants Scheme is a great example of how targeted investment can help bring ambitious, high-quality cultural experiences into the city centre. Installations like this not only inspire and engage residents and visitors, but also play an important role in increasing footfall, encouraging dwell time and supporting our local businesses."
