Sections of the world’s first railway to carry passengers and goods have been saved for future generations, through a council-led active travel project.

Four stretches of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR), which this year celebrates two centuries since hosting the world’s first passenger journey, have been removed from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register:
