A GUNFIRE HOMECOMING FOR HMS RICHMOND

A great homecoming for the Plymouth sailors on HMS Richmond this afternoon.

The Type 23 frigate of the Royal Navy made its unforgettable return to the city today with a spectacular display of gunfire that echoed out across the Hoe waterfront.

Arriving a day earlier because of the poor weather conditions expected tomorrow, the crew on HMS Richmond will be met by family and loved ones at HMNB Devonport with flags and banners.

Westward Shipping News captured the ship leaving the Sound earlier this year to join Operation Highmast, where over 4,500 British military personnel have been involved, including 900 soldiers, 600 RAF personnel, and 2,500 Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines, with the UK carrier group sailing more than 40,000 nautical miles, with aerial components completing 2,500 sorties.

The Carrier strike group was led by the UK’s flagship, HMS Prince of Wales, which received a huge homecoming in Portsmouth this afternoon with HMS Dauntless.

WELCOME HOME HMS RICHMOND

HMS Richmond arrived inside the breakwater just before 10am this morning, and is now at anchor.

The frigate left Plymouth in the Spring for Operation Highmast, to protect with other warships the UK flagship HMS Prince of Wales on deployment in the far east, Japan and Australia.

The Carrier Strike Group was comprised with a defensive ring of steel, provided by HMS Dauntless (air defence), HMS Richmond and HNoMS Roald Amundsen (anti-submarine and surface defence).

HMS Richmond’s Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander James Callender, said he “could not be prouder” of his shipmates for all they had achieved.

“We are now looking forward to the joy of homecoming and being reunited with the family and friends whose support has helped make this deployment possible," he said.

HMS Richmond will fire a spectacular Gun Salute around 1:45pm off the Hoe foreshore on its way into HM Naval Base Devonport and is due alongside about 2.30pm - to be met by families and loved ones.
