A brand new pop up outdoor festival has opened for the summer at Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) ☀🎶🎭🍺🍜🍩

Located in the outside area at the rear of the theatre, Summer in the Scene Dock is a collaboration with South West based artists Trifle Gathering Productions and will be hosting a mix of free and some paid events featuring local bands, DJs, quiz nights, theatre performances, family events, cabaret and variety nights throughout the summer period.

Week 1 has proven very popular, but fear not, there's plenty more to come ! The Public are invited into the space every Thursday to Sunday until 30 August and will incorporate a mix of open access, free bookable and paid-for ticketed events. Doors will open midday until late, and all ticketed events can be pre-booked on the website or bought at the door on the day. A range of food and drink offerings will be available onsite, with local vendors including Chennai Street Kitchen, Corn & Crunch, Mama Rita’s Afro-Caribbean Kitchen, The Early Bird, Plymouth Jollof Kitchen and Oriental Kitchen, plus a bar and tuck shop.

Themed days will run throughout the festival including ‘Fete Day’ (Sun 17) which will encompass all the elements of a village style fete and offer community celebrations such as puppet making, face painting, fete games, a cake competition, craft and live music. Pride Day will take place on Sunday 24 where visitors can enjoy a variety of workshops and family-friendly activities and settle in for an evening of poetry and music. TRP will also be offering the opportunity to explore TRP’s main Lyric stage and auditorium every Sunday afternoon with a Behind the Doors Tour.

There will be events, activities and performances suitable for all ages.

Tom Jackson Greaves, TRP Associate Artistic Director, said: “Summer in the Scene Dock is the place to be this summer! This is our first time creating an event like this and we want to invite the people of Plymouth to come along and experience all it has to offer.

“There’s something for everyone; for those who want to watch a show, take part in a themed quiz, keep their young ones entertained, grab a bite to eat, dance the night away to a resident DJ or simply sit back, have a drink and soak up the atmosphere.

“Whether you’ve got tickets to watch Hamilton on the Lyric stage and want to drop in before, or if you’ve never stepped foot inside the theatre, this will be a welcoming space for all.”

Historic blue plaque honours achievements of Ralph Alger Bagnold.

A new blue plaque has been unveiled in Stoke today in honour of Ralph Alger Bagnold OBE FRS KL (1896-1990), a Plymouth-born man who became a scientist, explorer and soldier and whose ground breaking research into sand dunes has been recognised by NASA.

Bagnold was born on 3 April 1896 and grew up in Stoke. During the First World War he was an engineer in the British Army. He then served in the Second World War as the first commanding officer of the ‘Long Range Desert Group’. The unit carried out dangerous reconnaissance work and raids behind enemy lines in North Africa and is considered to be a forerunner of the SAS.

Bagnold also published books based on his research. In between the wars he undertook the first recorded east-to-west crossing of the Libyan Desert and pioneered the use of motor vehicles to explore the harsh terrain. His ‘Libyan Sands: Travel in a Dead World’ has been described as a ‘classic work of 20th-century Saharan exploration’.

His second book, ‘The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes’ was inspired by the many sandstorms he witnessed during his time in the desert. It remains an important reference point for scientists today and has also been used by NASA to study sand dunes and the development of sand-driving mechanisms on Mars. The Bagnold Dunes, a 22-mile-long group of sand dunes on Mars were named by NASA in his honour.

Bagnold’s plaque was unveiled at Astor Hall, Devonport Road, Stoke. Now a care home, it was once his childhood home. The plaque will now be installed on the front of the property – a lasting tribute to a legacy that bridges military service, exploration and scientific innovation.
