We are very fortunate in offering for sale some of the most beautiful boats in the World, and we consider it both our pleasure and our duty to guide you carefully towards ownership of the yacht that is right for you. Of course there are choices to make, but whether the artistry of William Fife, the balance of Olin Stephens, the sure-footedness of a Buchanan or Holman and more contemporary yachts, we would want the love affair - which may start here - to be enduring.

ROBERT CLARK 39 FT MYSTERY CLASS SLOOP 1938/2001 : CERESTE

CERESTE is such a perfect example of a state of the art late 1930s classic yacht that it’s hard to believe the Mystery Class design was Robert Clark’s first, having served no apprenticeship with an established design office, or any training in yacht construction. Twelve were built just before and after the Second World War, with CERESTE one of the finest living examples following her extensive rebuild by Suffolk Yacht Harbour 1998-2001. In the ensuing years she’s been more racer than cruiser, with an enviable prize haul: competitive under both IRC and CIM without compromise to her beautifully proportioned sail plan. Her enticing accommodation, very easily handled rig, and the reputation for all round competence Robert Clark’s Mystery Class comes with, also guarantees that gentle or more ambitions cruising in CERESTE with family and friends will always give pleasure. With that added ingredient of the elegance afforded by a masterpiece.

LAK II : ANDRÉ MAURIC 46 FT BERMUDAN SLOOP 1939/2007

LAK II is a beautiful yacht that in a sense carries in her timbers the story of France over the past 85 years. Born in a brief period of optimism between depression and war, and somehow a survivor of that war’s deprivations; designed by a young naval architect, André Mauric, whose genius would later become universally recognised; vibrant participant in the carefree post war years, and in France’s intense America’s Cup campaigns of the 1970s... But in the end, a wonderful yacht because André Mauric had that touch of technical and artistic flair that guarantees immortality. LAK II was given a new lease of life in 2007 that ensures another lifetime of pleasure giving. In current ownership in England she has been recently given a fully electric propulsion system and new sails, and won her class at the 2022 edition of British Classic Week and has not been off the podium since… we can’t help thinking LAK II should be back racing in the Mediterranean and cleaning up under the CIM Rule…💪

PEGGY BAWN : G L WATSON 36 FT GAFF CUTTER 1894/2005

PEGGY BAWN is a rare thing indeed. The number of surviving vessels from pioneering Clydeside yacht designer George Lennox Watson’s lifetime (1851-1904) can be counted on a careless carpenter’s fingers. Long gone are his huge America’s Cup challengers and “Big Class” racing yachts, and only two of the fleet of palatial steam yachts – the superyachts of their day – from his Glasgow drawing boards are known to survive, in fabulous condition although barely recognisable from their original appearance. It is left to PEGGY BAWN to carry the flame for Watson’s groundbreaking mid-1890s work in setting the standard for moderation in sailing yacht design, work that has never been challenged – only endorsed by those who followed his lead through the 20th century, especially Olin J. Stephens, who was a self-confessed Watson fan. PEGGY BAWN’s gilded “fiddle” bow was anachronistic even at her launching in 1894, partly a past fad, partly practical, undoubtedly beautiful – an interim stage in the development of extending immersed waterlines for faster sailing when heeled with a more buoyant hull – but it conceals the fact that when her award-winning restoration team began assessing what they’d found in a County Waterford hay barn in 2003, they quickly realised that the “numbers” – yacht designer speak for the various ratios that define a hull – were simply a scaled-down version of those for Watson’s famous royal racing cutter Britannia of 1893. PEGGY BAWN’s present owner can vouch for that from fourteen seasons of racing and cruising aboard her in northern and Mediterranean Europe, and east coast USA.

We captured these images on the Solent last week with our great friend, drone pilot and photographer ace, Richard Langdon.

CHLOË GISELLE : SPIRIT YACHTS 65 2015

In the Spirit Yachts 65 the marque has come of age, designer Sean McMillan leaving behind skerry cruiser roots to evolve something unique and of course highly attractive. Still with an eye for the grace and craftsmanship of the 1930s, but perhaps suggesting how the work of mid-century British yacht designers like Camper & Nicholsons, Kim Holman, George McGruer and Angus Primrose might have evolved. CHLOË GISELLE is probably the Spirit 65 that has ticked off the most sailing locations in her short lifetime in the knowledgeable ownership of a repeat Spirit Yachts client. She made her maiden forays afloat in the Far East, and with family and friends has raced and cruised both sides of the Atlantic and the English Channel. CHLOË GISELLE’s sail handling systems allow for effortless short-handed sailing, while below her beautifully lit and spacious accommodation offers great conviviality and privacy all at the same time.

We filmed her here last week on the sunny Solent☀️

MISCHIEF : ED BURNETT 45 FT GAFF RIGGED PILOT CUTTER 2008/2025

MISCHIEF is the fabulous result of naval architect Ed Burnett and traditional boatbuilder John Raymond-Barker’s deeply informed research in creating an as near as possible replica of the 1906 Thomas Baker of Cardiff designed and built original Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter - internationally famous in the 1954 to 1968 ownership of mountaineer, explorer, voyager, and author H.W. “Bill” Tilman. Since her 2008 launch at Bristol, MISCHIEF has been a much loved, far travelled, and well proven family cruiser in the the Mediterranean, on Spain’s Atlantic seaboard, the West Coast of Scotland, and more recently in the Westcountry of England.

ALPHA : BRISTOL CHANNEL PILOT CUTTER 51FT WILLIAM STOBA 1904/2024

The Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter type has long been held in the highest of esteem as the perfect all round offshore sailing vessel, and ALPHA completely fits that billing. Her long and interesting life has been guaranteed to last many more years through a major restoration and, more recently, complete replanking in oak and deep refit, all in present, experienced ownership, undertaken by some of the best practitioners of their craft. Independent of superb craftsmanship, the key element restored in ALPHA is her ability from birth as an easily handled vessel under sail and power by just two experienced people, while offering the most comfortable of accommodation for long periods afloat with plenty of space for friends – or to work as a superbly appointed hands-on charter boat.

MAGYAR : SAUNDERS-ROE 45 FT MEDINA CLASS TWIN SCREW MOTOR YACHT 1938/2018

Saunders Roe is a name mostly associated with aviation innovation, but with roots in boatbuilding on the Thames, then Cowes. Their 1930s Medina Class of fine, teak-hulled motor yachts gained an enviable reputation for seagoing properties and comfort; so well-built from the finest materials that they have survived mid to late 20th Century deprivations to become highly desirable restoration subjects. Now rejuvenated Medina Class yachts are ranging further than their builders could ever have imagined, to the Baltic and the Mediterranean. None finer than the last built, MAGYAR; meticulously restored by Harbour Marine Services of Southwold for an owner used to the strict disciplines of classic car restoration, and an experienced sailor under sail and power. MAGYAR represents an opportunity to enjoy classic motor yachting in the greatest of comfort and style, at sea and in port.

‘…there was a time in England when most things used by gentlemen were about as perfect as man could make them…’ wrote George Millar in his book ‘Oyster River’ (a must read..) about AMOKURA and sailing her shorthanded in the narrow channels and rivers of Morbihan in the 1960s.

Fred Shepherd designed fast yachts with more volume below deck than was usual in the 1930s - meaning generous accommodation compared to the American Yawls at 52ft from this period. This owner has sailed the last two Fastnet Races with his boat and made her strong enough to roll down a hill! He has reinstated her original sail plan - with a new wooden rig - and all her systems are impressive. She can cruise or race in comfort and will soon be back on the market..

Is she beautiful?! I will let you decide but I should add; I once had a Bank of Scotland marine mortgage approved to buy her myself…some 20 years ago now and this may not have been prudent at the time but regrets…well yes of course; for me - she is one of the most elegant boats of this size out there 🧐

There’s only one STORMY WEATHER… We captured this short film from the weather deck of another S&S Yawl, MANITOU, this week while racing at the Les Voiles d'Antibes… there is something so natural about these boats; watching them move is for me like watching a dolphin or a seabird - I always wanted myself a design by Olin Stephens from the period 1930 - 1950. You still get a vintage boat where art still perhaps triumphs over the science… but these yachts were game changers - real sailing machines - S&S had made a giant leap forward with DORADE and everybody wanted one - and perhaps they still do…❤️

DANCER (EX AVENIR) : BILL TRIPP JR / ABEKING & RASMUSSEN 55 FT BERMUDAN CUTTER 1965/2023

DANCER has Bill Tripp Jr’s distinctive and very attractive style written all over. His name means that sailing performance comes guaranteed; after all, she’s a slightly smaller design sister to Huey Long’s incredibly successful ONDINE II, also built by master yacht builders Abeking & Rasmussen in aluminium. In recent decades blue water performance cruising has been DANCER’s calling, and she does this with comfortable aplomb. Always well maintained and upgraded during 35 years of previous ownership, DANCER’s current owner since 2022 has fastidiously refitted the aluminium sloop to the extent that very few items of systems and equipment date from earlier than 2023. DANCER is well set for many more miles of ocean voyaging and/or family cruising and classic racing - the short sailing video in our feed here was captured last weekend by her owner while DANCER sailed herself..
