UK charity hits the road to collect tonnes of prosthetic legs for African amputees

UK charity STAND has launched its "Legs on Tour 2026" appeal, aiming to collect prosthetic leg components for amputees in sub-Saharan Africa who lack access to mobility solutions. Millions of amputees in this region face significant challenges due to the absence of prosthetic legs, often resulting in a cycle of poverty.

From August 3-6, STAND will travel across the UK to gather these components from prosthetic centers. The collected materials will be refurbished and sent to clinics in Africa, providing essential mobility to those in need.

To support this initiative, STAND is seeking to raise £20,000, with the first £2,000 matched by Blatchford, a leading prosthetics manufacturer. These funds will assist with the collection efforts and provide crucial care for amputees.

Tom Williams OBE, founder of STAND, emphasized the disparity in access to prosthetics, noting that up to 95% of amputees in low-income countries are without them.
