Nobody called it community.

It was just Tuesday. πŸ”‘

Mrs Hartley next door
had our spare key.

Not because we asked her.
Because that was
simply what you did.

Somebody took your bins in.
Somebody signed for
your parcel.
Somebody sat with your mum
while you were at work.

If your car wouldn't start,
a man three doors down
was under the bonnet
before you'd finished
looking at it.

Nobody kept score.
Nobody put it online.
Nobody expected
a thank you card.

You just knew that
if something went wrong,
somebody on your street
would notice.

The government's own
Community Life Survey
asked us again last year.

Only 4 in 10 said many
people in their neighbourhood
could be trusted.

In 2013 it was nearly half. πŸ˜”

We never voted for this.
Nobody stood up
and announced it.

It just quietly
stopped happening. πŸ’™

So tell me β€”
who had your spare key?

I'd like to read their name. πŸ‘‡

A British farmer can lose half his harvest to the driest July since 1836 and still isn't allowed to charge a penny more for what survived. 🌾

"I'll manage."

That is what Margaret said
when they told her
the 62 was finishing. 🚌

Not a complaint.
Not a raised voice.
Just β€” "I'll manage."

She is 79.
Lives four miles
outside the town.
Has done since 1974.

That bus was
Tuesday and Friday.

Post office. Chemist.
A cup of tea with somebody
who wasn't the television.

Nine passengers most weeks.
Not enough, apparently.

The consultation was online.

Margaret is not online. πŸ˜”

So now it is a taxi
she cannot afford,
or a neighbour she does not
like to trouble,
or four miles of country road
with no pavement on it.

And she still says
she'll manage.

That is the bit
that ought to shame us.

Because she will.
And nobody will ever
have to answer for it.

We don't cancel bus routes
in this country.

We cancel somebody's
last day out. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

IS THAT ACCEPTABLE? πŸ‘‡

Britain has closed 6,871 bank branches since 2015 β€” 53 a month, every month, for eleven straight years β€” and they still tell us it's what customers wanted. 🏦

We don't measure our work in hours.
We measure it in acres, in seasons, in harvests.

🌾 To everyone who works in acres, not hours β€” thank you. 🚜

Sunday dinner meant everyone at the table.
No phones.
Just talking.
Just being together.

🍽️ Only a third of British families now eat together every day.

Was life happier before screens were at every table? 😊

Saturday night.
Kitchen table.

The blazer comes out
of the wardrobe first. πŸŽ–οΈ

He checks the shoulders
for dust that isn't there.

Then the iron.
Then the beret.
Then the medals β€”
laid out on a tea towel
in the order he
was given them.

He does not rush this part.

Fifty-one years since
he first wore them.
He has never once
turned up creased.

Tomorrow morning he will
stand at the memorial
in his own town.

There will be a
handful of them now.

There used to be rows.

Nobody will film it.
Nobody will post it.
The traffic will keep
going round the roundabout.

And he will stand there
for two minutes anyway.

Because he made a promise
to lads who never got old
that somebody would. πŸ’™

He has kept every promise
he ever made to Britain.

Every single one.

DOES BRITAIN STILL CARE? πŸ‘‡

You'll remember the taste.

Not the ones in the plastic tray.
The ones off the tree
at the bottom of somebody's garden. 🍎

Warm from the sun.
Sharp enough to make
your eyes water.

Nobody had to tell you
what variety it was.
It was just the apple
from that tree.

Britain grew over
two thousand different kinds.
Bramley. Cox. Egremont Russet.
Names that sound like places
because that is exactly
what they were.

We have lost nearly
nine in every ten
of our traditional orchards.

Grubbed up.
Built over.
Not worth the money.

And now the apples
in the trolley have
flown further than
most of us ever will.

There was nothing wrong
with the trees.

There was something wrong
with the sums. πŸ’™

Somebody decided British apples
cost too much to be worth growing.

They were wrong.

MADNESS or PROGRESS? πŸ‘‡

Is there a harder conversation in Britain right now than a farmer telling his son there is nothing left worth passing on? πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

My dad picked
up a bottle
of milk from
the farm gate
at the end
of our lane
when I was little. πŸ₯›

Every Saturday morning.

I used to
go with him.

The farmer's wife
would pour it
straight from the
churn into glass bottles.

The cows that
produced it were
visible in the
field behind the gate.

I could see
them from where
I stood. πŸ’›

That milk tasted
like nothing I
have ever bought
in a supermarket.

Rich. Real.
Completely itself.

The kind of
taste that tells
you immediately this
came from somewhere
real and was
handled by someone
who cared about it.

My dad used
to say β€”

"You can taste
the difference between
milk that came
from a happy
cow and milk
that came from
a system."

He was right. 😊

Last year I
found a local
dairy farm selling
direct from the gate.

Took my own
daughter on a
Saturday morning.

She watched the
farmer pour the
milk into the bottle.

Looked at the
cows in the field.

Looked at the milk.

Looked back at the cows.

Said β€”

"Is that the
same milk from
those cows there?"

Yes love.

She carried that
bottle home like
it was something precious.

Because it was. πŸ’™

Does milk taste
better straight from
a local farm?

Anyone who has
tried it already
knows the answer. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

AGREE or DISAGREE? πŸ‘‡
