1. Chasing gear instead of story.
Everyone starts thinking “if I just get that lens or that camera, I’ll finally level up.” But the truth is, no one cares what you shot it on if the story hits. The best videographers master composition, pacing, and emotional rhythm before they master their kit.
2. Undervaluing their time and skill.
New shooters often say yes to lowball gigs just to build a reel. That’s fine early on — but if you never raise your prices or learn to say no, you train clients to expect discounts forever. You can build a portfolio and set boundaries at the same time.
3. Filming like editors — not directors.
They overshoot everything, thinking they’ll “fix it in post.” Instead, plan your shots like you’re telling a story live. Every clip should have a reason to exist. The edit becomes easier, faster, and sharper when you think like a storyteller instead of a camera operator.
If I had to add a fourth, it’d be hiding behind the work. Great videographers eventually learn they are part of the brand — people hire your eye, but they stay for your energy.
