Last week, at a glittering ceremony in London, young people from Ramsgate-based charity were crowned winners of the prestigious Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK) National Young Campaigner Award.

Selected from hundreds of UK entries, the Thanet group was the only collective community campaign in their category, beating powerful individual national advocates to win.

This award recognises the group’s tireless campaign to stop Kent County Council from selling Ramsgate Youth Centre at public auction, and was presented by writer, comedian and broadcaster Viv Groskop. The ceremony was streamed live to viewers across the UK, with The Observer acting as the official media partner.

By securing funding via the Ramsgate Pride in Place programme, Pie Factory Music has been able to take full ownership of the site, safeguarding it for future generations.

Zoë Carassik, CEO of Pie Factory Music says:
“To win this award after such a tough 16 months is absolutely incredible. It’s testament to the power of young people’s voices and their collective will to prevent important spaces like ours from being closed. We couldn’t have done this without our community getting behind the campaign every step of the way – thank you.”

Celebrate the Thanet young people’s win by sharing their story on social media and send them a message via Pie’s Instagram Pie Factory Music.

Football is a game of two sides. Of division and opposition. UNITED attempts to do the opposite.

Players become a single form. Moving balls combine with their earlier echoes. Colours merge together, freezing moments of action that would otherwise disappear.

Using collage, sculpture, and animation, the exhibition draws together fragments of football imagery to create something collective rather than competitive, connected rather than divided.

UNITED opens at Where Else, Margate on Wednesday 17th June.

Free entry.
