Who was at the opening of the new seafood restaurant Little Kraken at the weekend?

Ramsgate locals Paul and Mel, who told us they were blown away by the support, felt this town was a perfect fit for a cozy, boutique restaurant with an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. They wanted to offer a unique, localised seafood experience right on their doorstep.

Paul brings 36 years of hospitality experience to the table, having trained classically in seafood at the beginning of his career. After exploring various sectors within the industry over the decades, he is returning to his true passion: working with fresh seafood.

Mel, Paul’s partner and sidekick, has stepped up to bring his vision to life—taking charge of the back-office operations and ensuring front-of-house service runs seamlessly.

Little Kraken’s menu is inspired by classic seafood dishes that remained popular throughout Paul’s career, featuring signature specialties such as crab and prawn mac & cheese served with garlic sourdough. Non-seafood options will be available, along with a lunch menu from 12-3 Thursday through Saturday. Additionally, starting Sunday, September 27th, Sunday roasts will be available too!

Starting from September 10th, Little Kraken is open:

Thursday - Friday 5 - 10 pm
Saturday 4 - 10pm
Sunday 12 - 7pm

Congratulations to Ramsgate Community Cinema which has been nominated for the British Independent Film Awards BIFA Cinema of the Year!

The cinema, which was founded just two years ago, is a volunteer-run, independent cinema and charity hub located on the High Street, and is home of the Kent Film Foundation charity which runs free youth film and arts programmes, and networking events for professional filmmakers.

Recent screenings (which have been packed!) include the Oscar-winning film Sinners, a 40th Anniversary screening of Jean de Florette, indie films, and old British classics such as Village of the Damned and Whistle Down the Wind. Screenings are announced weekly on Instagram and Facebook, and take place on Wednesday evenings at 7pm and Friday matinees at 2pm.

With an ethos focused on accessibility and community, admission is pay-what-you-can at the door. The door opens half an hour before screenings, and there’s even free tea, coffee and popcorn on Wednesdays!

To vote for them, head over to Ramsgate Community Cinema and follow the link in their bio, or go to bifa.film/coty-vote/ramsgate-community-cinema. Voting closes on 21st September, and the winner will be announced on 6th December.

And if you want to go along to one if their screenings, you can sign also up to their newsletter via www.kentfilmfoundation.co.uk which gets sent out every Monday announcing what films are screening that week.

Good luck Ramsgate Community Cinema, you’ve got our vote!

Have you been to the Tollgate Kiosk yet?

Fifteen year old Ellie Vaughan, who is running the kiosk and serving customers old and new during her first season, contacted us at Ramsgate Recorder because she loves working there, and wanted us to let you know all about what they do.

Originally a ticket booth selling tickets to visitors who wanted to stroll through the gardens, the small but perfectly formed building in Victoria Gardens on Ramsgate’s seafront is part of our town’s historical heritage. It now serves hot food, ice cream, snacks, souvenirs, postcards, buckets and spades, and beach necessities such as sun-block.

Ellie told us; ‘ I work at the Kiosk because I want to give it the attention it deserves and help in every way that I can. We are open Monday - Sunday, 10am - 4pm.’

So if you’re in town, do pop down to see Ellie and support the Tollgate Kiosk!

We loved Ramsgate Day 2026!

This year, the annual community celebration — platforming local independent businesses, residents, performers, musicians and more — had a circus theme, paying homage to Sanger’s Circus, which famously established a permanent amphitheatre on Ramsgate High Street in 1883.

A huge thanks to Gemma Dempsey, Ramsgate Recorder columnist for “Gemma’s Jaunts” and regular contributor, for these photos. Gemma, who is also the Visit Ramsgate Project Manager helped with the event, and captured the joy as our streets filled with dancing, fitness workouts, live music, handmade and vintage fair, food stalls, costumes, history talks, and free workshops. The day ended with the Parade of a Thousand Bubbles — a procession featuring more live music, giant puppets, and a bubble-filled finale.

We also love the footage taken by STORME SABINE of our editor amongst all the bubbles.

A huge thanks to Ramsgate Town Council Council who funded this wonderful event. We’re already looking forward to Ramsgate Day next year!

The new issue of Ramsgate Recorder is here!

Our autumn 2026 cover features Maker’s House as we look inside this all-new venture celebrating the crafts.

Pet owners might recognise the building as the one-time veterinary practice Plunkett’s. Publisher Polly Powell Batsford has lovingly restored it, and it now looks toward a future celebrating craft as Polly Powell. It features top makers, including Ramsgate-based artist Jessie Cutts Artist. Jessie Cutts. pictured with her fabulous hand-created quilts draped from the windows.

The Festival of Sound Ramsgate Festival of Sound returns in September. We catch up with headliner LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER back from Eurovision and working on his next project as we showcase what to expect from four days of music taking over the town.

Sick of working from home? We take a tour of the growing list of co-working spaces that offer more than just a desk.

And there’s plenty more inside: we meet The Ramsgate Society, artists Anna Silverton and Caroline List, we’re talking loose leaf tea and enjoying chips at the town cafe turning 50.

Come and join us tonight at Balcony of Kent from 6-9pm for a complimentary glass of fizz, and be the first to pick up your copy.
