Used EVs vs. ICE Cars: Are We Already at Price Parity?

It might surprise some, but recent findings suggest that in many like-for-like comparisons, price parity in the used car market has already been achieved—or is just within reach.

That’s a major shift.

And it challenges long-held assumptions that electric vehicles are always the more expensive choice, especially secondhand.

This highlights why it’s so important to stay close to the data. Market dynamics are changing quickly, and those who reassess their views with fresh insights are better positioned to make smart decisions.

Have you seen similar trends in your industry? Are assumptions holding back progress?

🚗⚡ Episode 154: How EV Sales Are Surging — and What It Means for the UK’s Net Zero Journey

Liz Allan is joined by Ben Nelmes, Executive Director and co-founder of New AutoMotive, to unpack what the recent surge in EV sales really means for the UK’s climate goals.

In June, 1 in 4 new cars sold in the UK was electric — a landmark moment that signals more than just market momentum. It tells a story of shifting mindsets, better products, and smarter policy. But is it enough?

Together, Liz and Ben explore:
📊 The power of data-driven insight in cutting through misinformation
📉 The real cost of driving electric and what the public gets wrong
📜 How the ZEV mandate is shaping the future of mobility
⚖️ Why affordability and inclusion must remain at the heart of this transition

Ben also reflects on his journey from Parliament to founding a think tank that's now shaping policy, supporting industry, and holding governments accountable.

“The charger was slow!”

But was it… really?

It’s a common scenario:

A driver plugs in at 82% battery, expecting a rapid top-up. Instead, they get a slower-than-expected charge—and the public network takes the blame.

But here’s the truth:

As batteries approach full capacity, charging naturally slows down to protect battery health.

This is part of the charging curve, a key concept many drivers aren’t aware of.

This isn’t just about managing expectations—it’s about building trust in public charging networks by improving education.

How do we better equip drivers with this knowledge?

Clearer signage? In-app info? Better onboarding at point of sale?

⚡ Why do we assume faster = better when it comes to EV charging?

There’s a common belief in the industry that ultra-rapid charging is the gold standard. But let’s challenge that:

🚗 If your car is parked overnight at home, a hotel, or a workplace…
🕒 Do you really need a 30-minute top-up?

Context matters.
Charging needs vary, and destination AC charging can often be a more efficient, cost-effective, and grid-friendly solution—especially in places where dwell time is high.

💡 It’s not just about speed. It’s about right-sizing the solution for real-world behaviour.

So, is faster always better—or are we just conditioned to think so?

Would love to hear your take.👇

🔌 Ever wondered about the complexity behind something as “simple” as charging an EV?

It’s not just about finding a charger anymore—it’s about how that charger fits seamlessly into your journey.

Imagine this:

You locate a charger. ✅

But then… you’re juggling apps, clunky interfaces, and unclear directions. ❌

Now imagine an alternative:

🔁 One streamlined platform

📍 Navigation triggered directly in-car

⚡ Plug-and-play hardware that goes live the moment it's energised

👀 Full visibility for CPOs from day one

This isn’t just about hardware—it’s about removing friction, boosting uptime, and empowering operators with real-time data and instant control.

The future of EV charging isn’t just fast—it’s frictionless.

💬 What’s been your biggest EV charging frustration—or your most seamless experience?

How often do unseen process gaps silently hinder progress?

Sometimes, it's not a lack of effort—but a lack of visibility—that stalls momentum.

In one recent discussion, a team struggling with EV charge point maintenance took a deep dive into their operations. What emerged wasn’t just technical data, but a quantified expression of long-held concerns.

That clarity?
✅ Sparked open conversations with service providers
✅ Turned instincts into insight
✅ Moved them from frustration to action

A timely reminder that surfacing the invisible is often the first step to solving the unsolvable.
