Why Those Birth Details Matter - This story was inspired by the reaction of a midwife when I once asked my brother in Nigeria for exact details of his baby’s birth weight and gestation. The midwife looked surprised because in the UK, those numbers are crucial for pregnancy care, but in Nigeria they are often not recorded with the same precision.

When Chioma moved to the UK and became pregnant again, the midwife asked a simple question:

“Do you know how many weeks you were when your first baby was born and his exact birth weight?”
Chioma paused. Her son was born in Nigeria, where no one talked about SGA (Small for Gestational Age), and no one explained that being smaller than expected for the number of weeks could affect future pregnancies.

If a woman previously had an SGA baby, she may need extra scans and closer monitoring the next time.
