Lamine Yamal, born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatoguinean mother, faced a choice between representing Spain or Morocco. Despite Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup semifinal run making him consider the option, the Barcelona winger committed to Spain in August 2023. He made his senior debut at age 16, becoming Spain’s youngest player and goalscorer. Yamal stated that while he holds deep affection for Morocco, he chose Spain because he grew up there, feels Spanish, and possessed a long-held ambition to compete in the European Championship and win a World Cup. His decision proved historic when he helped lead Spain to the UEFA Euro 2024 title, earning the Young Player of the Tournament award.
