CADDINGTON REMEMBERS
On Sunday 10th and Monday 11th November, Caddington again remembered its dead from two World Wars as well as all those who have lost their lives in wars and conflicts throughout the world.
On Sunday a large number of villagers gathered in All Saints Churchyard to witness and take part in the Service of Remembrance and wreath laying ceremony led by Reverend Lindsey Moss.
Among those present were Doug Baldwin, (pictured above) a 98 years and 51 weeks old veteran of the Normandy Landings. Doug is the last surviving member of the 6th Battalion of The King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Also present were Hans-Joachim Vorbeck and Jurgen Hettwer, representatives of our twin village of Oststeinbek, who laid wreaths at the War Memorial and the grave of the unknown German Prisoner of War in the Churchyard.
Scouts, Cubs and Brownies were well represented having paraded up Dunstable Road from the Scout Hut. They were led in the parade by four beautifully decorated horses ridden by four young people, Zoe Hughes, Charlotte Wigley, Stefanie Perrini and Victoria Uminska. They are not from the village but stable their horses locally. They all said it was a privilege for them to have taken part in the Service.
The Roll Call of those from Caddington to be remembered was read by David Tims and shortly before 11am the Last Post was sounded by Rebecca Lant followed by the two minutes silence. Rebecca has played the bugle for us before but always with her father, Derek Jones, but this was her first solo performance following the death of her father last year. It was a very emotional moment for her.
Thank you to all those organisations who laid wreaths in remembrance. The collections in the Churchyard and, later, in the Church raised £420 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal and so to all those who attended and contributed we are so grateful. We think that this year could have seen our largest attendance.
On Monday the 11th day of the 11th month at 11am a short Service of Remembrance was held on the Village Green. Between 30 and 40 villagers heard the Roll Call read by pupils from Caddington Village School followed by the two minutes silence.
We are extremely grateful to the School, Chloe Logan and Ellie Field in particular, for encouraging the pupils to participate.
