No, you are not a statistics, but understanding some WILL help you make your birth better. Here's how...

Birth stats show the trends, the norms and the 'usual' modes of birth in your area. They also show what's less so.

Knowing this gives you a clue as to the birth landscape your living in and how much preparation, groundwork and advocacy you're likely to need to do either in advance or on the day.

Ironically, knowing the statistics will give you the tools to make your birth your own, through foresight & through precedence.

But here's the tricky bit: some trusts publish their stats widely, while others do not. If yours is one that doesn't publish regularly, head to this week's blog to find out how you can access the information you need.

Why would you work with me? Because I make you feel like this...

💖 'Gemma is one of a kind! I have never felt so safe, welcomed and listened to, especially in such a vulnerable and new time of my life...' (Flo's mum)

💞'I was quite nervous about our antenatal classes but immediately felt at ease seeing Gemma’s smiling warm face. We learnt so much and immediately felt part of a community. Partners are also really involved in all tasks which is really great.' (Issy)

💖 If you don’t ready any more of this review than the first few lines, then just know this - Gemma is a birth super hero and every parent can HUGELY benefit in one way or another by the superb support that Born To Birth provides. (Lauren)

💞 This group has helped me so much in my confidence and in my own self belief as a mum❤️ could not recommend enough to anyone! Thank you Gemma!⭐️ xx' (B.P)

Every week, an antenatal or doula client asks me a question about Cornwall's birth statistics. They ask me because they're not published in an easily accessible way & need to know something to help them make the decision.

So I help them, either by telling them what I know or by showing them these three tools that'll help them to find it themselves.

Want to know what they are? Check out this week's blog to find out more.

No one sees the moment you pause to breathe instead of snapping back.
No one applauds the way you soften your voice while their anger is rising.
No one gives you a gold star for holding it together in a supermarket aisle while your child melts down.

But it matters.

Every time you regulate instead of react
Every time you stay close instead of shut down
Every time you respond with calm instead of control
You’re teaching something powerful.

Not obedience. Not fear.
But safety.
Co-regulation.
Trust.
Resilience.

It might not look like much from the outside.
But inside your child’s nervous system
you’re building something that lasts.

And even if no one claps
know that what you’re doing is brave
and it’s enough.

You don’t need to be perfect.
Just present.

For anyone struggling, this book is your blueprint for becoming a happier, calmer parent:

"Why would you not want to share the highs and lows with other people who get it?" (Flo's Mum)

Birth Space Cornwall has been in existence for three weeks and already the community is building beautifully:

💬 Our online check-in chats have been filled with story-sharing & "me too!" moments for our pregnancy and postnatal crews.

😍Our private page is filling with advice on nappy brands and clothing togs for hot weather.

💞 The resources & knowledge areas have helped people to avoid the Google hole of doom as they navigate both pregnancy & postpartum journeys.

This week sees the first two of our 'Ask the Experts' Q&A clinics, giving Birth Space Cornwall members the chance to pick the mind of a local independent birth & baby expert.

Tonight, Alannah from Calma Mother - an infant feeding coach and doula - will help our collective members prepare to breastfeed, and on Thursday Kathie Kendall - one of Cornwall's two practising independent IBCLCs will cover as much as she can on reflux & colic in 60 minutes!

This is a collective at it's finest: a place where pregnant & postnatal people come together to ride the waves and learn about the adventure as they go through it.

September's schedule sees the introduction of in-person events for pregnant and postnatal families in Cornwall too, with discounts exclusive to the members of the collective.

Self-care changes once you discover you're pregnant, and I refuse to believe it bounces back...

Once you're pregnant, those hot tubs and spa days become trickier, and those nights out harder work.

Once your baby is born, that early night & a lie-in become a distant memory.

As your baby grows, the quietness of life or the adventures of travel become less reliable as calmers.

Life changes.
What calms you changes.
The thing you need to reset, changes.

This is a picture of my lunch today: I had it with a cup of tea and a friend in the sunshine as our children pelted us with waterpistol fire.

Yes it was chaotic, and 6 years ago this would have been my nightmare. But today this was self-care.

It made me laugh.
It grounded me into the moment.
It made me breathe and see what's around me.
It fixed a day.

As a doula, my role isn't to make pregnancy, birth or postpartum stable or understandable - it's to be this grounding reset to help you navigate it when things aren't.

When everything is chaotic and scary and overwhelming, your doula will be there to reset it.

Investing in a doula IS self-care.
Today my lunch reminded me of that.
