After spending most of last night sorting out receipts for my year end, I was reminded that it’s 5 years since I swapped a salary for possibility.

It felt like the scariest gamble ever at the time but I’m so glad I listened to the more positive ‘What If…?’ noise not the ‘You and Harry will end up under a bridge in a cardboard box’ voice.

No big business lessons, just heartfelt thanks to everyone who’s been part of it so far.

Bring on year 6.

A founder recently told me they were spending 'a fortune on ads' (£100k+ per month) but still didn't have a brand.
And they were right - they have traffic, sales, some followers but no distinctive story.
No loyalty.
No pricing power.
It’s common - confusing attention for affection.
Businesses that scale well know brand is a bankable business asset - not just a logo and colour palette.

Sometimes I get called in to “fix the marketing.”
The numbers are not where they need to be and fingers are pointing at the ads.
But then we dig in a bit, it turns out -
The targets are off.
The margin’s just too tight to scale.
Or the product isn’t priced right for retail.
And suddenly, the problem isn’t really the marketing - It’s the commercials underneath.
Not saying marketing can’t be improved, but it’s not always the lever that needs pulling first.

There’s a wave of people calling themselves “growth consultants” lately.
And no judgement - we all start somewhere, but some of them are selling playbooks that look suspiciously like the last course they took.
Founders get caught out - they think they’re hiring a strategic brain but what they actually get is a junior media buyer with a funnel template.
If growth is feeling noisy, messy, expensive and a bit 'button pushing' - you’re not alone.
It’s probably not you.
It’s probably the advice.

Yesterday I spent a well deserved and much needed day away from my desk.

So great to catch up with some lovely familiar faces at I stuffed my curated agenda with AI and Retail Media sessions.

If I could go back in time and have a little talk to myself, I’d tell me…

- You are not stuck. You don’t have to stick in a role that no longer fits you or the company you’ve been at forever just because you have a mortgage to pay.
- People like you can set up on their own.
- Not only can you do it, but you’ll do it pretty damn well too.
- That because you’re a single parent, with a chunky mortgage & school fees to pay, turning away from employment and a regular salary will keep you awake at night but keep the faith - taking the step will be worth it.
- Almost 20 years at the biggest media agency has taught you stuff you haven’t even surfaced yet - you’ve forgotten more than many claim to know 😉.
- And what you don’t know on this new path you’ll throw everything at to learn.
- The relationships you’ve built will be your starting point but the work you do and what your new clients say about you will keep the doors opening.
- Being around for the teen cub when he gets home from school is everything, even if he behaves like he only wants you for snacks, money & taxi services.
- When it comes, the process will nearly break you but redundancy will be the best thing for you at that moment in time.

If it was life advice... I could go back and whisper it would be to bin off 2 of my exes and wear SPF every day much sooner... 😂
