Let's Explore Fort Clarence East Casemates in Rochester in Kent.
Part 1...

Built between 1808 and 1812 to defend against a Napoleonic invasion, Fort Clarence in Rochester featured the East and West Casemates as heavily protected gunrooms. They were designed to sweep the fort's dry ditch with fire. Disarmed by 1820, the fort later served as a military prison and lunatic asylum.

After the Napoleonic Wars, the fort was disarmed and repurposed. It acted as a military hospital in the 1830s, a military prison (where soldiers were routinely flogged), and an early military lunatic asylum.

World War II: The East/West dry ditch and its partially buried casemates were called back into active military service as a small artillery range and Home Guard headquarters.

Wartime Graffiti On The Walls Of The Abandoned Ramsgate Tunnels..

The chalk walls of Ramsgate’s extensive, un-restored tunnel networks feature a remarkable collection of World War II-era graffiti. Left by families who lived there to escape the Blitz, much of the historic chalk and pencil artistry remains remarkably intact, including period-specific sketches, caricatures, and dates.

Let's Explore Another Section Of The Abandoned Ramsgate Tunnels in Kent..

A massive concrete trunk sewer, known as the Newington Trunk Sewer, was built through the abandoned sections of the Ramsgate Air Raid Precaution (ARP) Tunnels in 1949–1950. This 6-foot diameter pipe fills most of the original floor space, completely rendering sections of the western network inaccessible.

The pipe runs directly through the network from Ellington Road (near Ellington Park) all the way to the Westcliff / Harbour section.

The DOE Tunnels in Dover in Kent (located behind a quarried chalk face in Limekiln Street) are early 19th-century excavations, likely dug by Napoleonic prisoners of war as lime workings and storage. They served as Second World War air-raid shelters and were later used by the Department of the Environment (DOE) in the 1970s.
