Seven weeks to update our Google business address. Twelve hours to prove why it mattered.
When we moved warehouses recently, I immediately started updating our business rates address, online directories and Google Business Profile. I knew Google would be the most challenging, and it certainly was.
Because our new location is quite rural, our verification attempts kept being rejected. We submitted evidence, completed checks and sent videos, but we still could not convince Google that we were a legitimate business operating from the new address.
After seven weeks of persistence, we were finally approved and, within 12 hours, we received our first enquiry through Google.
CANADA needed a production base for a short film, with Marta Bobic as the Producer and Lewis Mitchell as the Line Producer. Our large car park became a staging area for their low loader, giving the team enough room to turn it around, prepare and rig the vehicle safely before it went out onto the road for filming.
They also used our office space for hair and makeup, crew and administration areas, DIT stations and other production facilities, with access to our kitchen and toilets throughout the day.
It was a great example of how an existing commercial space can become something completely different when the right people discover it.
The day also reminded me just how small our industry is. Their First AC was our friend Ben McFarlane, whom we have worked with regularly over the years. Lewis had recently returned from two years in New Zealand, where he had got to know our good friend and Colour Grader, Paul Handley.
Paul happened to call me while the production was taking place today. He was surprised to discover that Lewis was there. Then the DIT, Steve Day, suddenly appeared over my shoulder on the call too. It completely blew Paul’s mind.
There were two simple lessons from the day.
Keep your business information up to date, even when the process is frustrating. You never know which customer is searching for exactly what you can offer.
Also, keep in touch with people. Industries are smaller and more connected than we sometimes realise, and relationships have a wonderful way of coming full circle.
Seven weeks of Google verification. Twelve hours to our first enquiry. One brilliant reminder that persistence and people really matter. 😍
