BBC Radiophonic Workshop archive gets a licensed samples pack

“Oooo-EEE-oooo… ooo-eee-ooo… OOO-EEE-oooo… ooo-eee-ooo… Dun-dun-dun-dun… DUNNNNN!” .. This, friends, is how you sing the classic Ron Grainer / Delia Derbyshire Doctor Who theme tune, which was famously created in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Now that team’s pioneering work in electronic music has been turned into a sample pack by Spitfire Audio and BBC Studios – the first time this archive has been mined in this way for use by producers and artists.
The sample pack includes sounds from the original tapes made within the Radiophonic Workshop, as well as new ‘recordings and experiments’ by team members and collaborators. “We’re not just looking back at what the members were doing way back when.
We’re projecting a strand of their work into the future and saying: if the Workshop was engaged with a similar process now, what would it sound like?” said Spitfire Audio’s head of recording Harry Wilson.

For 40 years, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was the place to go for the sound of the impossible – the unruly engine behind the music and effects of Doctor Who, the Goon Show, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and countless other BBC productions. It was a place of other worlds, and of other so...

Regional Studio of the Year

Award winning Studio (West Midlands STUDIO OF THE YEAR 2015-2018) set in a park-side location next to the river Avon on the edge of Rugby in a zero-carbon building.

Used by Fred Cox (Producer/Writer for Rag n Bone Man, Paloma Faith, Izzy Bizu), Alix original (Universal/Kobalt), Matt Cotterill (Flipside Studios, Speak Brother), Sam Skirrow (Clean Bandit), Dan Hutchinson (Zara Larsson). We’ve also hosted FEMME, Jin Jin (Jess Glynne), Phil Harding (Kylie), and many more. Our LIVE ROOM is capable of holding a 30 voice choir with ease - or a full 8 piece band with kit, backline and separation screens. The CONTROL ROOM is also luxuriously large - with a tuned upright piano and sofa to accommodate band members during those long days - and plenty of room for Control Room recording sessions too. We also have a Yamaha House Kit, Fender 5-string Bass and a selection of guitars for clients who are travelling light.

We also have a separate break-out room with tuned upright piano and a kitchen. Our in-house equipment has ProTools, Logic and all the mics you will need to satisfy your production needs. The studio is also designed to allow Producers to insert their own preferred set-up with ease - and we can provide our house engineer to give as much or as little help as you require. Built from 250 straw bales, lime-rendered in the traditional manner, earth roof and reclaimed materials and powered by sunlight and magic. Run by a creative and passionate team with decades of experience and fabulous current music industry connections. With rainwater harvesting, food growing areas and natural solar heating - this is an ecologically sustainable construction with highly efficient energy use in its operational design. Video has become an essential component in any Artists' tool box. We also have a dedicated Video Production team in a separate building on-site - running Adobe's Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, LightRoom - as well as an experienced crew to help you plan and execute your video needs - from a simple studio recording through to a location based storyboarded production.

Big Help Music’s HQ is also on-site with an experienced team to advise on promotion should you need it. They also have in-house graphics design and certified social network platform growth advisors.
