Preparing Scotland’s Commercial HVAC Sector for Net Zero 2045
Scotland’s 2045 net zero target is accelerating the shift from gas and oil to low-carbon heating — and commercial M&E contractors and consultants are central to making it happen.
In Baxi’s new podcast, recorded at Edinburgh Zoo, Alan Omand and Colin Kirkwood join host Anne Wraith to discuss:
🔹 Upskilling in low-carbon technologies
🔹 Barriers and opportunities in switching to heat pumps and heat networks
🔹 Real project examples — including Scotland’s first Passivhaus Primary School
🔹 The role of hybrid solutions when full electrification isn’t yet practical
As Alan puts it, now is the time for contractors to prepare for the changes ahead and build the skills needed for a low-carbon future.

More than half of branded van owners in the UK say their vehicle signage has made them a target for thieves, according to new research from temporary business van insurance firm Tempcover.

The survey of 500 van drivers found that 54% of those with branded vehicles have experienced theft, attempted theft or vandalism they believe was linked to their signage. A further 39% said they had not faced any related incidents, while 8% were unsure, highlighting a clear divide in how secure owners feel once their business is on display.

REHAU is set to host a free in-person workshop centred around the future of district heating on 27 November 2025, at The Building Centre in London. The Next Level Heat Networks workshop offers a free opportunity to gain innovative insights into low-carbon heat networks, panel discussions and a chance to network with industry experts.

The implementation of low-carbon solutions will be pivotal in achieving net zero, which is why REHAU remains committed to not only innovation but also creating opportunities – like their upcoming workshop - for industry stakeholders to stay up to date with advancements in low-carbon technologies and share their knowledge.

Multiple keynote speakers from the industry are set to lead discussions at the event, including representatives from Fairheat, AECOM and GTC – to name a few.

The day will include a brief introduction followed by two sessions of presentations, each with three keynote speakers. After each session a Q&A panel discussion will be held, allowing the audience an opportunity to engage with the topics discussed in depth.

The topics covered will include:

• updates on the heat network market, delivered by a representative from DESNZ
• updates on the Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme, by Tom Burton, Principal Engineer at Fairheat
the data centre heat reuse opportunities, by Asad Kwaja, Associate Director at AECOM
• innovation in polymer pipework and DH design software, by Alexandra Leedham, Technical Team Leader at REHAU
• a discussion of retrofitting a large heat network into a heritage estate, by Adam Bainbridge, Director at Teesdale Renewables
• a contractor’s perspective on installing new build low-density heat networks, by Alastair Vivian, Chartered Manager at GTC

Following the presentations and discussions there will be a light lunch, offering a networking opportunity to workshop attendees.

Which?’s Sustainability Tracker report for 2025 has revealed that households are increasingly open to getting a heat pump, but adoption has only reached around 3% as homeowners struggle to make the switch.

The call comes in the week when the government announced a delay to the launch of its Warm Home Plan, which sets out its strategy to encourage more than 90% of UK homeowners that heat their homes with gas and oil boilers to switch to new electric heating systems such as a heat pump.

A Middlesbrough man has received a suspended prison sentence after carrying out unregistered and unsafe gas work at two homes in Teesside.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found Neil Burton carried out boiler services in a home in Stockton-on-Tees on two occasions, in May 2021 and April 2022. Although Burton had previously been on the Gas Safe Register, he had allowed his membership and qualifications to lapse. A subsequent review of the boiler identified defects which meant it was classed as a risk and a danger.
