Supernova Plays Welcome to Supernova Plays! I'm Mal AKA Supernova - a game streamer over on Twitch Hi! I'm Supernovaplays a variety streamer from the North West of England.

It seems as if I've been playing games with or for an audience for most of my life; whether it be from playing Breakout with family around the Atari all trying to get high score, entertaining my niece and nephew while babysitting playing an array of games, going round friends to play the latest split screen games, playing for my son as he grew up influencing him to become an avid gamer himself. St

reaming for an audience is in my DNA. I couldn't imagine life any other way. I'm a big fan of open world games, but can play anything. I've been recently playing Assassins Creed: Valhalla, Red Dead Online, Ghost of Tsushima Watch Dogs Legion, Call of Duty Warzone and Destiny to name a few. I play on PS5 mostly and a little PC - If you want to join in any games I am playing message me and we can team up. Things I've discovered about myself since I started streaming

* I like to focus on chatting to everyone who joins even if it means I mess up in game.
* I love doing accents and impersonations whether they are good or bad or voluntary or involuntarily
* I've found out with my community that I love chaos in games! Give me a bazooka and put me in action and I love it!
* I've found my calling - I love gaming and wish I took this up sooner

🏆 JONA LEWIE IS OUR CHAMPION! 🏆

The votes are in, and we have a monumental winner! In a final that saw the giants of the industry fall, Jona Lewie’s "Stop the Cavalry" has officially been crowned the winner of the SupernovaPlays UK Christmas Song Showdown and wins the Christmas cracker paper crown!

The Rise of jona:

Jona Lewie’s path to the crown was nothing short of legendary. To get here, he had to take down some of the biggest heavyweights in music:

He started by marching past the indie charm of The Pretenders.
He won the "Battle of the Commute" against Chris Rea.

He pulled off a massive shock by defeating the charity powerhouse Band Aid in the Pre-Finals.

Finally, he stood his ground against the lyrical titan The Pogues to claim the top spot!

A Final Fact:

Did you know that Jona Lewie actually played almost every instrument on this track himself? Aside from the iconic brass band (provided by the Cory Band from South Wales), Jona played the synthesizers, the percussion, and even the kazoo! It’s a true one-man masterpiece that conquered the charts.

Why does it stay in our hearts?
There is something deeply British about "Stop the Cavalry." It doesn’t rely on glitter or Santa Claus; instead, it leans into a humble, brass-led nostalgia. It captures that universal feeling of being somewhere you don’t want to be and simply wishing you were home with the people you love. It’s a song for the "everyman," and that’s why it still resonates over 40 years later.

Watch this space! I have had so many requests for more tournaments that i’ll be back in the New Year with a brand-new set of brackets. Thank you for making this showdown so much fun!

THE GRAND FINAL: THE BATTLE FOR THE CROWN! 👑

What a tournament it has been! We started with 16 iconic UK hits, and the road to the final has been paved with shocks. Who could have predicted that the global Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, would be beaten in a landslide? Have we had enough of this staple of our UK christmas? Or that the high-energy glam-rock of Wizzard and Shakin' Stevens wouldn't make the final cut?

After weeks of voting on Discord and social media, we are down to our final two. It’s the humble, brass-led anti-war anthem against the gritty, lyrical masterpiece of a New York romance.

THE FINALISTS:

🎺 Jona Lewie – "Stop the Cavalry" VS
☘️ The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl – "Fairytale of New York"

Grand Final Facts

Stop the Cavalry: Although it’s a holiday staple now, it was actually denied the UK Christmas Number 1 spot in 1980 by two re-releases from the recently deceased John Lennon ("(Just Like) Starting Over" and "Imagine").

Fairytale of New York: The song’s famous title wasn't an original idea—it was actually taken from a 1973 novel by the Irish-American author J.P. Donleavy.

Only one can wear the tacky paper Christmas cracker crown! Does Jona Lewie’s sentimental march take the win, or does the raw poetry of The Pogues reign supreme?

THE PENULTIMATE BATTLE: THE PRE-FINAL CLASH!

We have our first Grand Finalist! Jona Lewie’s "Stop the Cavalry" has marched into the final after a massive win over Band Aid!

Now, it’s time to decide who will join him in the Final fighting for that coveted cheap paper Christmas cracker crown:

It's Wizzard’s "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" against The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl’s "Fairytale of New York"!

Song Facts

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday: To get into the festive spirit during the recording—which actually took place in a boiling hot August—the band decorated the studio with Christmas trees and turned the air conditioning down to freezing!

Fairytale of New York: The iconic video was filmed in a real New York police precinct, and the "choir" featured in the song was actually the NYPD Emerald Society Pipe Band, who didn't actually know the song "Galway Bay"—so they just sang the Mickey Mouse theme tune instead!

Which of these two titans deserves to fight Jona Lewie for the crown? The non-stop party of Wizzard or the legendary storytelling of The Pogues?

COMMENT BELOW with your winner and tell me why they deserve the title! Your vote decides the final!

🔥 PRE-FINAL 1: THE FINAL THREE BATTLE! 🔥

The Semi-Finals are history! In a surprise landslide, The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" completely dominated the votes against Mariah Carey and has secured its place in the next round, the pre-finals (I know I messed up the naming!)

Now, two Christmas hits clash to see who is in the grand final!

It's Jona Lewie’s "Stop the Cavalry" against Band Aid’s "Do They Know It’s Christmas?"!

Final Push Facts

Stop the Cavalry: The song's iconic line, "Wish I was at home for Christmas," was originally written by Jona Lewie for a song called "Stop the War Now," showing its primary message was never solely about the holidays.

Do They Know It’s Christmas?: The single was released in the UK in 1984, but Band Aid's success was so enormous that it inspired the massive US charity single "We Are the World" just a few months later in 1985.

Only two songs will reach the Grand Final. Which unique British classic takes the first remaining spot?

SEMI-FINAL 3: THE ULTIMATE FEEL-GOOD SHOWDOWN

The semi final bracket is nearly complete! Congratulations to Band Aid! Their powerful anthem Do They Know It's Christmas? won a massive vote against Paul McCartney and will take the second spot in the Final!

Now, the SupernovaPlays UK Christmas Song Showdown presents the third Semi-Final clash—the battle for pure, unadulterated festive joy:

It’s Shakin' Stevens' Merry Christmas Everyone against Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday!

Song Facts Showdown

Merry Christmas Everyone: Despite its 1985 release and instant popularity, Shakin' Stevens' song was originally recorded in 1984 but held back so as not to compete against the charity mega-single by Band Aid!

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday: The children singing in the chorus are from the choir of Stockland Green School in Birmingham, giving the record that iconic, authentic holiday sound.

The winner of this epic match-up advances to the the next stage to battle the winner of the fourth battle.

The Question: Which song is the definitive sound of a British Christmas? The exuberant 80s hit, or the ambitious 70s rock spectacle?

SEMI-FINAL 2 IS LIVE: THE POP LEGENDS SHOWDOWN!

We have our first finalist! A huge cheer for Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry, which marches into the Grand Final after a huge win against Chris Rea!

Now, the SupernovaPlays UK Christmas Song Showdown serves up an all-time classic battle for the second final spot:

It’s the upbeat, synth-heavy joy of Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime against the powerful, chart-breaking compassion of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?

🌟 Song Facts 🌟

Wonderful Christmastime: Paul McCartney played every single instrument on the recording himself, from the synthesizer to the drums continuing the legacy that he was a perfectionist to everyone's detriment!

Do They Know It’s Christmas?: It became the fastest-selling single in UK chart history at the time, selling over a million copies in its first week to raise money for the Ethiopian famine!

So, do you choose the simple, festive joy of Macca, or the earth-moving power of the 80s supergroup?

The opening rounds are complete! Congrats to The Pogues! Their victory against Wham! was clear, sending Fairytale of New York through to the Semi-Finals!

Now, the SupernovaPlays UK Christmas Song Showdown hits the final four!

It's the ultimate road-trip anthem, Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas" against the quirky, war-time wonder, Jona Lewie’s Stop the Cavalry!

🌟 Song Facts

Driving Home for Christmas: Did you know Chris Rea wrote this after being stuck in traffic trying to get home for Christmas, and his wife drove 250 miles to pick him up? Talk about dedication!

Stop the Cavalry: That iconic brass line isn't a military band; it's a euphonium! Jona Lewie originally wrote the song about military life in general, not specifically Christmas!
