Red foxes are giving birth to litters of four to six kits in secluded areas near residential homes, such as under sheds or woodpiles. At birth, the kits weigh a few ounces, have their eyes sealed shut, and display dark brown coats, making them unrecognizable as foxes. During the next two weeks, the mother will care for the kits in the den, while the male provides food, delivering it to the entrance without entering. To avoid disturbing the family, observe from a distance using binoculars if you suspect a den is nearby. It is crucial not to approach or provide food, as this can disrupt the parents' care. If a den is located under your deck or shed, it is recommended to leave it undisturbed until the family disperses in July. Given the temporary nature of dens near homes, contacting animal control is unnecessary.

“You won’t believe this!” My friend pulled me to the edge of the bluff, and my breath caught. Below, a tiny hippo calf, alone, was sniffing around a massive 12-foot crocodile! My heart pounded. Hippos are fierce, but a baby is easy prey. Where was its mother?
​We watched, riveted by the sheer audacity of this little one. The croc, a lurker with a 5,000 PSI bite, simply stretched out, its 'evil' smile frozen. And then... the hippo did the unthinkable. It snuggled right into the beast's embrace and promptly fell asleep!
​My mind screamed, 'NO!' but the hippo was oblivious. For 15 unbelievable minutes, this bizarre, peaceful tableau unfolded. A predator and its potential prey, sharing a moment of quiet repose. Finally, with a silent heave, the crocodile slid into the river, leaving the little hippo to awaken alone. A moment of pure, raw, and utterly bewildering nature. You truly had to see it to believe it. 🤯

​In the midst of the devastating Pearl River floods in Jackson, Mississippi, in September 2022, an incredible story of courage and compassion unfolded.
​While thousands evacuated their homes, Michael Harris, a 57-year-old homeless man, was asleep in an abandoned parking garage. He woke to the sound of sirens and rising water, but through the chaos, he heard something else – the desperate barks and cries of dogs left behind.
