Quite a few obituaries for Tony ‘Doc’ Shiels have appeared now. I knew the Telegraph were doing one because I provided them with the images. It’s rather good (and not behind a paywall atm). The Guardian obituary is shorter but still fair and accurate, and quotes from the artcornwall.org interview from a few years ago. I think Tony would have been glad… .org

As many of you will know Tony ‘Doc’ Shiels died about a week ago at the age of 86. His legend, though, will live on and particularly here in Cornwall where most of his artistic and magical activities took place. Although he ran a gallery in St Ives and was an early member of the , taking Barbara Hepworth’s place on the committee (no less), he broke free of the constraints required of most artists and ended up ‘doing his own thing’. This involved writing books, reviving folk traditions, conjuring the Owlman, and most famously, raising sea monsters. I felt honoured to work closely with him to write his biography, which I tried to make lively and lighthearted, to reflect his art and his personality. Whilst ‘Monstermind’ stands by itself it actually follows on from ‘Folk in Cornwall’ the book that preceded it (many of Doc’s friends involved with discovering Morgawr met at folk clubs nearby eg Tony Shaw who wrote the 1974 Folklore of Cornwall). It naturally also leads on to ‘Reenchanted Landscape’ (Doc Shiels knew lots of interesting people in Cornwall like most of whom are featured in the book. The pics here are some of favourite images from the Monstermind book. Some are drawings and designs by Tony, but there are many others I could have used. RIP

'The Holy Wells of Cornwall: Revisited' looks in detail at over sixty of Cornwall's most loved, most picturesque and most magical holy wells. Covering a period of over 2000 years, from the pre-Christian period to the Celtic revival, it examines the history of their use as water sources, baptistries and sites of healing, and it also describes their rediscovery in more recent times.

'Thoroughly researched.... a brilliant book' (Cheryl Straffon - Meyn Mamvro)
