✍️Thanks to Dave Petley of the Landscape Blog for a glowing review of Gareth Hearn's book Engineering Morphology. Dave said that Gareth "may be the most experienced practitioner of engineering geomorphology" and loved the book for being "beautifully illustrated – in some cases the diagrams are close to being works of art in their own right". Also in praise were the "very detailed case studies drawn from his work".
The book is summed up as "a richly illustrated, practical and detailed guide for future practitioners"

A book that combines the experience and case studies from the author’s 40-year career in engineering geomorphology with a review of other published work. It describes and illustrates how techniques of geomorphological assessment are used to help avoid and resolve land use planning and engineering difficulties associated with the terrain and its geohazards.

📣📣📣 New Release!

This book offers a fresh, authoritative perspective on lightweight concrete (LWC), bringing together cutting-edge research, industry insights, and real-world applications. Providing a comprehensive overview of modern LWC materials, mix design, structural behaviour, and emerging technologies, it highlights how LWC differs fundamentally from normal-weight concrete and how these differences can be leveraged for superior performance, sustainability, and cost efficiency.

Drawing on an in-depth analysis of the U.S. construction market, the authors illuminate the business mechanics behind LWC adoption and demonstrate its often under-recognised advantages—from reduced transportation and labour demands to energy savings, enhanced durability, and lower environmental impact. The book also breaks new ground with dedicated chapters on fatigue and dynamic behaviour, self-compacting lightweight concrete, and cellular LWC, complemented by case studies from real projects.

Written by leading experts in the field, this resource blends rigorous theory with practical guidance, making it indispensable for engineers, architects, contractors, researchers, and students. Whether you are an experienced practitioner or new to the subject, this book will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to integrate LWC into modern construction and to recognize its transformative potential in both technical and commercial contexts.

This is more than a reference—it is a call to rethink current practice and to elevate the role of lightweight concrete in shaping the built environment.

This textbook on tanker operations provides an accessible guide to the knowledge and skills required to improve work safety, and enhance a seafarer’s awareness of their social responsibility to the marine environment.

It covers all the aspects of tanker operations with lucid explanations using enhanced graphics and diagrams and is bound to be of immense value for those keen to serve on board an oil tanker as a cargo officer’.

Extract from Foreword by Ms Mary Liew, General Secretary, Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union

This vital new handbook complies with the learning objectives of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Advanced Oil Tanker model course (2-3-2). It is easy to read and understand and is supported by several photos, enhanced graphics, links to video sites (for relevant topics), tables and examples of tanker calculations.

It will be indispensable reading for students who wish to pursue a career at sea and serve on tankers as officers. It will also be essential for maritime colleges for use as teaching material for their tanker courses and also as a reference book. Tanker companies will also find it of great value where it can be kept on board their vessel/s as a handy reference.
