Teenager Toby Sutcliffe is making serious waves in the world of canoe slalom - and his school is behind him every stroke of the way.

The 15 year-old from Llanberis, a pupil at St Gerard's School Trust in Bangor, is currently ranked among the top five C1 slalom athletes in the UK for his age group.

A dedicated year-round paddler, Toby trains on Llyn Padarn and at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham and has competed in the Junior Slalom European Cup in France and Germany as part of the Welsh Performance Team.

He joined St Gerard’s aged seven and is about to start Year 11. Balancing elite sport with his GCSE studies, Toby says the school has played a key role in helping him chase his goals.

“My ultimate aim is to reach the highest national division, then Team GB,” said Toby said.

“I’d love to make it to the World Championships or the Olympics one day."

From Flint to the frontlines of UK politics, a former Coleg Cambria student has taken on a leading role at a respected London-based think tank.

Matthew Barnes, now based in the capital, began his academic journey at Deeside Sixth Form Centre, where he studied A Levels in Government and Politics, Media Studies, English Language, and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Now 23, Matthew has gone from strength to strength, recently completing a Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism at the The University of Sheffield, where he also earned a BA in International Relations and Politics.

His academic excellence was recognised with the prestigious Dan Walker Journalism Scholarship and the award for Best Overall Performance in his postgraduate programme.

Currently working as a media and communications officer, Matthew’s journey into the political sphere began during his time at Coleg Cambria—a period he describes as instrumental in shaping his future.

“My time at Cambria was fantastic,” he said.

“From day one, I was treated like an adult and supported by brilliant tutors who encouraged me to push myself."

Four leading educational institutions have united to form the North Wales Tertiary Alliance (NWTA) - a landmark partnership to strengthen education and skills development, fuel economic growth, and improve life opportunities across the region.

Launched today (Tuesday) at the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru in Wrexham, the Alliance includes Bangor University, Wrexham University, Coleg Cambria, and Grŵp Llandrillo-Menai.

Together, they aim to build a more coherent, inclusive, and connected tertiary education system that better serves learners, communities, and industries at every level.

LAUNCH: Borehole geophysics technology leader Robertson Geo has officially opened its new headquarters, bringing all UK operations under one roof and marking a major step in the company’s continued expansion.

The move to Tre Morfa Enterprise Park in Conwy from sites in Deganwy and Llandudno follows sustained growth for the award-winning business, which serves customers in more than 160 countries and operates from additional bases in the US and Hong Kong.

The new 20,500 square-foot facility features a purpose-built manufacturing facility, modern offices, a training hub, and a world-class calibration centre that will serve as a standard-setter for the markets they support — including the renewables, geotechnical, offshore wind, mining, energy, and environmental sectors.

The interior has Japanese and Welsh influences including Bonsai trees, slate from local quarries, a Kaizen ‘ideas wall’ and bespoke, tailored details marrying industry and contemporary design.

The firm plans to expand further within the park to accommodate its growing Robertson Geo Services team.

Speaking at the launch, Managing Director Simon Garantini welcomed guests and thanked partners and staff: “It’s emotional leaving our previous premises after more than 45 years, but this move marks the start of an exciting new chapter.

“The new headquarters gives us the space and facilities to realise our ambitions, collaborate more effectively, and continue innovating at the forefront of our industry.

“Our team has grown, international demand is increasing — especially in the US and Asia — and we’re now well-positioned to steadily double both our headcount and sales revenue.”

Guests at the event included Cllr Emily Owen, Deputy Leader of Conwy County Council, Bangor Aberconwy MP Claire Hughes MP, and senior representatives from OYO Corporation of Japan, Robertson Geo’s majority shareholder.

A fundraiser with iron will and a heart of gold is heading to the Baltics for an epic charity challenge.

Jack Unwin, a 30 year-old environmental consultant from Chester, is gearing up to tackle one of the world’s toughest endurance races – the Ironman Tallinn in Estonia.

Jack is raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK and Manchester Women's Aid, with the support of Mackenzie Jones Solicitors, a law practice based in St Asaph, Chester and Menai Bridge.

The gruelling event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, is a full Ironman-distance triathlon renowned for its fast course, comprising a 3.8km sea swim off Stroomi Beach, a 180.2km bike ride through scenic Estonian forest, and a 42.2km marathon run.

Originally from Suffolk, Jack has previously completed shorter triathlons but is taking on his first-ever full Ironman.

A college and champion of the Welsh language is running a new series of courses to prepare visitors and businesses for the National Eisteddfod.

This year's festival is to be held in Wrexham, and Coleg Cambria, which delivers courses on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh in north east Wales, is supporting learners of all abilities planning to attend in a personal or professional capacity.

Cambria's Director of Welsh Language Development Llinos Roberts – chair of the executive committee for the event, which runs from August 2-9 – says the programmes have already been well received, online and in the classroom.

As the college's Camu building undergoes major redevelopment to become a Centre of Excellence for the Welsh Language – including an extension of the interior and classrooms, additional learning spaces, a café, state-of-the-art technology and a staff 'agile hub' – Llinos says the courses were designed to celebrate bilingualism while helping non-Welsh or non-fluent Welsh speakers "fully immerse themselves" in the celebrations and activities on 'The Maes'.

"We have had a lot of positive feedback and sign-up for these courses, notably from employers attending this year's National Eisteddfod," she said.

Landowners on Anglesey are being asked to come forward and help map the future of the island.

Cadnant Planning Ltd is working closely with landowners and developers following the county council’s ‘Call for Sites’ – a key step in shaping the new Local Development Plan (LDP), which will guide future growth and development through to 2039.

The council is inviting submissions of land that may be suitable for housing, employment, community, or recreational use, as well as sites that should be protected for their environmental or cultural value.

All submissions must be made using the local planning authority’s standardised form before the extended deadline of August 4 this year.

With decades of experience in land promotion and planning strategy, Cadnant Planning – based in Conwy and Pulford, near Wrexham and Chester - is supporting clients throughout the process, from site identification and constraints mapping to preparing supporting documents and liaising with the planning department.

Managing Director Sioned Edwards said: “The call for sites is a valuable opportunity for landowners and developers to put forward land they feel has development potential, whether for housing, employment, or community uses.

“The council has extended the consultation period, which gives people more time to come forward and explore their options.”
