This is Mark Shiels. He battered the mother of his children over the course of several hours then asked her: 'Why did you make me do this to you?' 😡

Shiels was already banned from contacting his then girlfriend when he subjected her to the "appalling" assault over the course of several hours.

The ordeal left her suffering from "vivid nightmares of him attacking her", having previously missed her own daughter's 18th birthday party after he left her with a black eye.

She told a court yesterday: "I don't think I will ever be the same again. It will take me many years to recover, if ever."

Last year, she was "immediately met with aggression" from the 33-year-old defendant upon arriving at his flat as he asked her "where the f*** she had come from" and inspected a scratch mark on her neck using a torch.

The prosecutor described how Shiels "seemed to calm down" after being told that this injury had been caused by her coat before they then began drinking inside his address.

Having left the property at one stage, his partner later found him speaking to police officers outside, at which time he told her to return inside and followed her while shouting "why are you a grass?"

Shiels then hit his victim, "causing her lip to burst", before kicking out at her, leaving her with bruising and swelling. His attack continued even after she "screamed for him to stop", having repeatedly pulled her back into his home when she attempted to leave.

This included following her into the communal hallway of the building and elbowing her to the face, causing bruises around her eye. They later visited a neighbour's flat, where the complainant fell asleep.

However, she was subsequently woken by Shiels striking her again and, upon returning to his own apartment, he pushed her inside before shouting that she "always brought trouble to his door".

Having taken hold of her phone and snapping the device in half, smashing the screen, he then threw her onto his bed and pinned her down, hitting her to the face once again and asking: "Why did you make me do this to you?"

Shiels has 17 previous convictions for 23 offences, including receiving three years and three months for wounding with intent in 2009 and 122 days in prison for assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2012.

He was also locked up for six weeks and handed a restraining order, which banned him from contacting his partner, for two matters of battery, in which she was the victim, earlier in 2025.

Shiels admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and breaching a restraining order. Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool, he was jailed for 43 months and handed an additional 17-month licence period.

Shiels will be required to serve at least two thirds of the 43-month term behind bars before becoming eligible for release. He was also handed a new restraining order which will ban him from contacting the complainant for the next 10 years.
