ANTIQUE SHIP IN A BOTTLE
The sailor's folk art of putting tiny model ships into bottles We specialise in genuine antique sailor made ships in bottles.

These scratch built minature ship models were expertly crafted to fit perfectly inside an old bottle. Sailors spent hundreds of hours "off watch" making these models and they were often presented to relatives or loved ones as a gift. A perfect example of sailors folk art and no two are the same.

A very unusual item indeed, looks like the ship model might be made from Ivory or bone ? A very rare form of sailors folk art 👌

Just added this little beauty to the collection 😲😍👌- Antique sailor made ship in a bottle of a four masted barque complete with a very detailed diorama backdrop. Circa 1900.
The ship is flying the British Ensign flag and also has a pennant named ALICE, the ship has standing and running rigging on the masts and spars. The ships hull is painted with fake gun ports and deck details include: deckhouse, ships boats, Stantion’s and skylight.
The model is mounted on a simulated putty sea and it is accompanied by a pilot cutter and a steam tug which is complete with smoke coming from its funnel.
The diorama backdrop consist of two headlands with a waterway between, there is also a picture of another square rigged sailing ship coming between the two headlands.
On the left hand headland there is a castle on top of the hill, and a windmill, whilst beneath this there is a lighthouse, trees and houses.
On the right hand headland there is an aeroplane (biplane) flying over, below there is a walled lighthouse with several houses and trees.
I think you will all agree that this is a superb example of this very skilled and underrated old sailors folk art 👌⚓️

Just had this little beauty delivered, it’s an antique sailor made ship in a bottle ( Circa 1890’s / early 1900’s ) it is supported in a frame made from an old tea chest. It is also complete with ni****ne build up so might have been in an old pub at some point in its life. This type of merchant sailing ship ( A four masted barque, aka square rigger ) would have carried cargoes like tea all around the world and they used nothing more than the wind and a lot of manpower 💪, oh and good seamanship skills of course - no pollution whatsoever. The sailor who made this model and inserted it into the bottle was obviously a very seasoned craftsman because the ship model fills the entire inside of the bottle. A fine example of this type of sailors folk art 👌 It was probably made as a gift for a loved one and even has the motto ‘HOMEWARD BOUND’ to remind them that he will be looking forward to his passage home. ⚓️⛵️🌊💨

We have recently been consulted by Homes and Antiques magazine, needless to say it was about an article that they have written regarding collecting Antique ship in a bottle models and this unique form of sailors folk art.
