The Quoit of Zennor – Cornwall’s Forgotten Tomb
Hidden among the rugged hills near Zennor in west Cornwall lies Zennor Quoit, a collapsed but still impressive Neolithic chambered tomb built around 3500 BC.
Once a grand portal dolmen, the quoit originally featured massive upright stones supporting a huge capstone that has since fallen. Even in ruin, it commands the landscape, offering sweeping views across the moor and down toward the Atlantic coast.
Local legends say the site was once used by giants, and later became tied to tales of witches and Cornish folklore. Archaeologists believe it served as a communal burial place — a focus of ceremony and remembrance for the region’s earliest farming people.
Few visitors reach it today, but those who do often describe a deep stillness in the air — the quiet voice of a monument that has stood for over five millennia.
