WAIT… THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS WE NEED TO SEPARATE HERE. 👇🏽

A lot of people hear “store your inventory outside Amazon” and immediately think, “Oh, she’s saying I should do FBM.”

No. ❌

These are two completely different decisions.

1️⃣ WHERE DO YOU STORE YOUR INVENTORY?

You can be 100% FBA and still store some of your inventory outside Amazon.

For example, your supplier in China has a MOQ of 5,000 units, but you know you won’t sell 5,000 units anytime soon.

Instead of sending all 5,000 units to Amazon and paying Amazon to store inventory you don’t need yet, you could:

📦 Send an appropriate quantity to Amazon for FBA
🏢 Store the remaining inventory in a cheaper warehouse/storage facility closer to you or closer to Amazon
🔄 Replenish your Amazon FBA inventory from there as you sell

You’re STILL 100% FBA.

You’re simply managing your inventory intelligently.

This can also make sense when you want to hold more stock closer to Amazon so you can replenish quickly and reduce the risk of running out of stock, rather than waiting for another shipment from China.

2️⃣ THEN THERE’S FBA vs FBM

This is a completely separate decision.

FBA: Amazon fulfils the customer order for you.

FBM: You or a third-party fulfilment centre fulfils the customer order.

There are situations where FBM can make sense, particularly for certain heavy, bulky, low-margin or otherwise expensive-to-fulfil products.

But you can absolutely have:

External storage + FBA

without doing FBM at all.

So please don’t confuse “where I store my inventory” with “who fulfils my customer’s order.”

And this is exactly why I always tell my students:

Don’t just follow what everyone else is doing. Understand your numbers and make the decision that makes sense for YOUR business.

£3,000 can be enough to start an e-commerce business…

But it can also disappear VERY quickly if you don’t have a strategy. 😩

One of the biggest mistakes I see new Amazon sellers make is putting too much money into inventory before they’ve properly validated the opportunity.

They find a product they like → order lots of stock → spend on branding → ship it in → and THEN start thinking about how they’re going to sell it.

That’s backwards.

You need to understand the demand, competition, margins, differentiation and marketing BEFORE committing your money.

Your first goal isn’t to own lots of stock.

Your first goal is to build a business that can actually make money.
