*Chapter 13: The Unexpected Ally*
Abigail's eyes locked on Jaxon's as she listened to Joe's words. She knew they were in for a wild ride, and she was ready.
"Who is it, Joe?" she asked, her voice low and urgent.
There was a pause, and for a moment, Abigail thought the connection had dropped.
"It's Victor's lawyer," Joe said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think he's the one backing Clayton."
Abigail's eyes widened in surprise. Victor's lawyer? She had never suspected him.
"Are you sure?" she asked, her mind racing.
"Positive," Joe replied. "I've seen them talking, and I overheard them mentioning Victor's name. I think they're planning something big, Abigail."
Abigail's grip on her phone tightened. She knew she had to act fast.
"Thanks, Joe," she said, her voice firm. "Keep digging. I want to know everything you can find out."
She hung up and turned to Jaxon, her eyes flashing with determination. "It's Victor's lawyer," she said. "He's the one backing Clayton."
Jaxon's eyes narrowed. "We need to take him down."
Abigail nodded, a plan forming in her mind. "I have an idea. Let's pay him a visit."
They arrived at the lawyer's office, a sleek skyscraper in the heart of town. Abigail strode up to the receptionist, her eyes flashing with confidence.
"We're here to see Mr. Thompson," she said, referring to Victor's lawyer.
The receptionist looked up, startled. "Do you have an appointment?"
Abigail smiled sweetly. "No, but I'm sure he'll want to see us."
The receptionist hesitated, then picked up the phone. "I'll see if he's available."
A few moments later, the receptionist nodded. "He'll see you now."
Abigail and Jaxon walked into Thompson's office, their eyes scanning the room. Thompson, a smooth-looking man in his late 40s, smiled at them from behind his desk.
"Ah, Abigail," he said, his voice dripping with charm. "What can I do for you?"
Abigail smiled, her eyes locked on his. "I know what you're doing, Thompson. And I'm here to tell you to back off."
Thompson's smile faltered, and for a moment, Abigail saw a flash of anger in his eyes.
"What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice cool.
Abigail leaned forward, her eyes flashing with determination. "I know you're backing Clayton. And I know you're using Victor to do your dirty work."
Thompson's expression didn't change, but Abigail saw a flicker of surprise in his eyes.
"I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about, Abigail," he said, his voice smooth.
Abigail smiled, her eyes locked on his. "Don't play games with me, Thompson. I know the truth. And I'm going to expose you."
Thompson's expression hardened, and for a moment, Abigail saw the ruthless businessman beneath the charming facade.
"You're making a big mistake, Abigail," he said, his voice low and menacing. "You don't know who you're dealing with."
Abigail smiled, her eyes flashing with determination. "I know exactly who I'm dealing with, Thompson. And I'm ready for you."
