💷The Economic Benefits of recycling your clothes

1. Job creation – The UK textile recycling industry provides employment in sorting, resale, and upcycling businesses.

2. Circular economy – Keeping clothing in use longer supports sustainable fashion and reduces dependence on raw material imports.

3. New business opportunities – Growing demand for sustainable fashion encourages innovation in upcycling, repair services, and textile recycling technologies.

According to an extensive survey of over 6,000 UK adults:

The average person owns 118 clothing items.... I'm not average!

It was confirmed our wardrobes hold around 1.6 billion unworn garments collectively in the UK, with 25% of clothes unworn for a year.

A whopping 65% have clothes with tags still on, i.e., never worn.

one-third of all clothes we own are never worn, with a total unused value of £23 billion across the UK.

If you're looking to break this cycle, I can share some effective tips for decluttering or helping these items find a second life ♻️

Want to make your wardrobe more eco-friendly? Try these:
👗 Shop secondhand first
🔁 Host a swap with friends
🧵 Repair before replacing
🧼 Wash clothes less often and cold
🎽 Donate what you don’t wear (we can collect!)

Small steps = big impact.

Did you know, In the UK, most charity shops ask that people don’t leave donations outside when the shop is closed. Here’s what typically happens if you do:

1. The items may be stolen or rifled through – Things left outside are often taken by others before the shop staff arrive.

2. Weather damage – Clothes and goods can get ruined by rain or damp, making them unsellable.

3. Considered fly-tipping – Legally, leaving donations outside a closed charity shop is classed as fly-tipping (illegal dumping) under UK law. Local councils can issue fines of up to £400, and in serious cases it can go to court with higher penalties.

4. Extra costs for the charity – If items are damaged or dumped, the shop has to pay for disposal instead of making money for their cause.

5. Safety and obstruction issues – Piles of bags can block pavements, create fire hazards, or attract vermin.

I can collect your items for free, at a convenient time, that suits you.
I sort them and donate some items, when the shop is open, to prevent further waste

Just one if the Charities I give to.

Do you know what happens to unwearable clothes?

How Salvation Army UK Recycles Your Clothes,

*Sorting with Technology

At their Kettering processing centre, SATCoL uses Fibersort™ technology—a combination of cameras and spectrometers—to automatically sort textiles by fibre type and colour using jets of air.

This helps separate wearable items from those destined for recycling.

*Recycling & Global Repurposing

Reusable but unsellable items are typically sent overseas to areas that need affordable clothing—while also raising further funds for charitable causes.

Unwearable or end-of-life clothing may be:

Shredded for fibre reuse, e.g., turned into filling for mattresses, car insulation, or new textile fibres.

Shredded into slurries and decolourised to be remade into new garments in Sweden.

*Innovative Recycling: Project Re:claim

A world-first recycling initiative begun in Kettering in partnership with Project Plan B: Project Re:claim converts polyester textiles into granules that can be spun back into yarn. It's operating at commercial scale and plans to recycle up to 2,500 tonnes in 2024—with a target to double this in 2025. Collaborators include retailers like Tesco and John Lewis.

*Environmental Impact & Ethical Standards

SATCoL handles 250 million donated items annually, diverting waste and reducing emissions—avoiding an estimated 453,000 tonnes of CO₂ between April 2022 and April 2023.

They adhere to ethical processes via the TRUST framework, ensuring high standards in reuse, recycling, and supply chain conduct.

Whilst I would never buy a real Fur, I have fond memories of my mum in the 1980's in hers. She has held on to it for years and yesterday passed it to me to sell. On closer inspection the collar is cracking and now I have no idea what to do with it. I wonder if this could be recycled 🤔😢

🌍 Why Sustainability Matters

Caption:
Fast fashion isn’t free—it comes at a cost to our planet 🌱
Every year, the UK sends 336,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill.
But we can change that. One donation, one outfit, one mindful choice at a time.

💚 Choose secondhand.
♻️ Rewear what already exists.
🌸 Support a sustainable future.
