An excellent end to this season at the Everyman Folk Club with guitar virtuoso, Kevin Dempsey on Friday. Kevin dazzled us all, not only with his incredible dexterity, but also his immense repertoire and ability to switch between genres and styles in a performance that included folk, blues, jazz, funk, and bluegrass. We were entertained with an imaginative variety of traditional and modern songs such as rhythmic Wicked Polly; complex All For You; and sensitive Just Around The Corner (Kieran Goss). The tremendous yet unpretentious display by this versatile entertainer ended with Kevin’s beautiful and haunting rendition of The Parting Glass – a supreme end to a superb evening.

We are grateful to the night’s engaging floor singers: Phil Lyons, Ian & Michelle Wright, Dave Tricker, Charlie Haylock (the night’s magnificent MC), David Cotter, and Bill Johnston & Sheila Darling. Well done one and all.

As ever, huge thanks to the bedrock of the Everyman - our amazing audience for support and encouragement throughout this season. We wish everyone a lovely Summer, and we’ll see you on Friday 26 September 2025 when Damien Barber and Mike Wilson open our new season.

A sensational evening with Nancy Kerr & James Fagan who performed for a sold-out crowd at the Everyman Folk Club yesterday. Their exhilarating performance included exciting new material as well as familiar songs from their 30-year partnership, augmented brilliantly by Nancy’s violin and viola, and James’ 8-string-bouzouki and guitar. It was a privilege to hear some of the songs they have discovered from archives of English music – through their Music-Heritage-Place project. The virtuoso musicianship of this skilled duo was remarkable in their sets of tunes – from Macedonia and Croatia as well as fabulous Australian waltzes. This joyous evening was filled with glorious singing and harmonies, exquisite playing, and superb arrangements, all presented with passion, vitality, and warmth.

Last night’s entertainment included great floor spots from Louise Forster & Kelly Woods, Steve Danby, Will Martin, and Bridget Cousins & Phil Bennett. Thank you all for your contributions to the evening.

Our splendid audience joined in at every opportunity – of course – and we’re looking forward to seeing and hearing you all again next time – on Friday 30 May 2025 - when Kevin Dempsey is our guest for the last night of this Everyman season.

An abundance of traditional music from Mat Green & Andy Turner at the Everyman Folk Club on Friday night, performed with energy and verve by these two tremendous musicians. Mat’s unique and vivacious fiddle style was matched brilliantly by Andy’s punchy Anglo concertinas and one-row melodeons – the perfect combination for their assortment of English rhythmic dance tune medleys that included jigs, barn dances, quick steps, and polkas. The evening included an interesting selection of well-researched songs, with some gorgeously smooth playing to accompany Andy’s fine voice. A wondrous performance, enhanced by the natural charm of this personable duo.

Very well done to all the evening’s floor performers: Dave Tricker, Paul Gill, Bill Johnston & Sheila Darling, Shirley Harry (the evening’s terrific MC), Matthew Robertson, and Colin & Karen Cater – thank you all for your songs and tunes. Thanks as well to everyone in our fabulous audience, for your excellent singing and for making our guests and visitors so welcome.

We look forward to seeing you next month, when Nancy Kerr & James Fagan join us on Friday 25 April 2025.

Thanks to Green Matthews for a superb performance at the Everyman Folk Club on Friday evening. Chris and Sophie delivered a wealth of songs and tunes from their extensive traditional repertoire, as well as songs by Chris, and words by poets including Cicely Fox Smith set to their own tunes. One highlight was the poignant poem by May Wedderburn Cannan – Lamplight – beautifully sung by Sophie to a heartrending tune by Chris. We also enjoyed a couple of numbers from their recent musical adaptation of Wind in the Willows, with their new lyrics to traditional tunes taking us to the river bank and on a drive with Mr Toad! Their engaging introductions were enlightening about the pieces and informative about the multitude of instruments they were playing – a wonderful evening!

Huge thanks to all our floor performers for their songs and stories - Jeremy Fox, Graham Schofield, Penny MacKay, Robin Pooley, Terence Blacker, and the night’s marvellous MC – Charlie Haylock.

Thanks too to our magnificent audience for your support and your singing. See you next time, when Mat Green & Andy Turner are our guests on Friday 28 March 2025.

🎶 What a treat it will be to have Green Matthews at the Everyman this Friday - 28 February 2025. With a repertoire spanning 600-years, Chris Green and Sophie Matthews play English traditional songs and tunes in a thoroughly 21st-century kick-ass style. Using a blend of ancient instruments including cittern, English bagpipes and shawm as well as modern folk instruments such as guitar, flute and piano accordion, they breathe new life into material from hundreds of years ago, making it fresh and relevant for a modern audience.

An enthralling and delightful evening in the company of Cathy Barclay & Sarah Yarwood at the Everyman Folk Club yesterday. When singing separately, each has a distinctive voice, but the harmony singing of this mother and daughter duo has a magical quality. We enjoyed a glorious assortment of songs; the blend of traditional and newly written material being as terrific as the fusion of their voices – and their commentary on the sources of their music was both fascinating and moving. Their renditions of Ay Waukin’ O and Linden Lea were exquisite, and we were all touched by Sarah’s Mother, Maiden, Crone. Dave Webber’s My Lady of Autumn was the perfect encore.

We were also treated to songs, poems, tunes, and monologues from the evenings floor performers - Tracey Wisdom, Sammy Holland, Steve Danby (with his guitar making its debut), Alan Day, and Keith & Mary-Jane Tyrrell. Brava tutti! We are very grateful to Shirley Harry for her seamless emceeing, together with Jackie & Dave Tricker and everyone who helped ensure the evening ran smoothly.

Thanks as well to our fantastic and supportive audience, who ventured out on a very wet and cold evening, overcoming disruption on the roads to be with us. It is always a pleasure to witness your superb chorus singing, and we can’t wait to hear you again next time, when Chris Green & Sophie Matthews – Green Matthews – are our guests on Friday 28 February 2025.

A terrific evening at the Everyman Folk Club last night with our charismatic guests, Donnelly and South. This energetic duo treated us to an evening of self-penned songs and sensitive ballads, each with intricate and melodic accompaniments on Keith’s guitars, and Lauren’s violin, shruti box, and tenor guitar. Their accomplished musicianship was evident throughout, and we were enthralled by the selection of Lauren’s beautiful tunes too. Keith and Lauren’s introductions were peppered with wit and laughter, and great fun was had by all.

We were also entertained with songs and monologues from our enjoyable floor performers - Dave Tricker, Louise Forster (first appearance at the Everyman), Robin Pooley, Stephen Atkinson, and Charlie Haylock. Thank you very much.

As always, our incredible audience responded wholeheartedly to every opportunity to sing. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and, of course, your support. See you next time for the last club night of this season – Friday 31 May 24 with Crows: Mick Ryan, Dave Bordewey, Paul Downes, and Pete Harris.
